Went to update my 520 last week and again today and keep getting a corrupted device. I have tried a different cord, have pulled the SD card, formatted it and put the map files back on it and it still won't work. Today I connected to the computer, quick formatted and did a long format of the SD card while it was in the 520 but the dock still does not see the card. I also updated the dock today. Any other ideas?

I really have no clue but what means did you use to update the 520? Web or downloaded software app? I'm not even sure if they still allow updating via a web site portal but I always found using the downloaded app to be the cleanest.

Do you have another SD card to try? What OS were you in when you tried reformatting the card via the USB and what reformat options were selected?

I found this on Garmin's site
    ------
    How do I format a microSD/SD card?
    09/24/2015

Sometimes a microSD/SD card may require formatting before it can be used with a Garmin device.

NOTE: These instructions are only for formatting a microSD/SD card. It is not recommended to format any Garmin mass storage device unless otherwise directed by Garmin Product Support or these FAQs. It is important to avoid formatting the Garmin device as this may leave it in an unusable state.

If the microSD/SD card is intended for use as a camera card for the dezlCamLMTHD or the nuviCamLMTHD, refer to the FAQ: How do I format the camera SD card on my dezlCamLMTHD or nuviCamLMTHD?

    To format a microSD/SD card:

    Windows:

Format the microSD/SD card to the FAT or FAT32 format. A 2 GB or less card can be formatted in FAT or FAT32. Cards larger than 2 GB should be formatted in FAT32. Cards larger than 32 GB should be formatted in exFAT2.

    1. Place the SD card into the SD card slot in the device3
    2. Press the Windows key + E on the keyboard to open Windows Explorer/File Explorer
    3. Click This PC (Windows 10 only)
    4. Locate the Removable Disk1 icon representing the SD card
    5. Right-click on the Removable Disk icon
    6. Click on Format
    7. Change Allocation unit size to Default allocation size
    8. Ensure Quick Format is checked
    9. Click Start
    Mac:

    1. Open Spotlight (CMD + SPACE on the keyboard)
    2. Type Disk Utility (in Spotlight search box)
    3. Press Return on the keyboard
    4. Click the parent icon for the SD card in the sidebar on the left (the parent icon is the one that is not indented)
    5. Click on the Erase option on the right
    6. In the Format drop down menu, select MS-DOS (FAT)
    7. In the Name field, type a name/title for the SD card (Do not leave the name as "Untitled")
    8. Click Erase
These steps will format the microSD/SD card to be readable by the Garmin device.

    -----

Are you sure you formatted the SD card memory, and not the internal device memory? IIRC they will show as 2 different external drives in Windows Explorer/Mac Finder, when connected via USB

I asked the Mods to move this to the TND support thread. No sense starting a new thread when one exists for this product.

Make sure you format it to Fat 32.

Make sure that the drive letter assigned the SD Card is higher than the TND drive letter.

The card may be corrupt and formatting will not fix it.

Make sure it is not an Ultra or Ultra Plus.

Any other issues you can put in the support thread or PM me.

    Mark

Oh, for some reason I associated "520" with a Garmin GPS. Disregard above posting. Guess I was thinking "570". However I suspect the recommended SD formatting instructions would probably be the same, regardless

Went out and got a new microSD. Copied the map files to it and plugged it into the 520. Worked like a champ and did the update. I then shut down the 520 and put the other card back in. opened it back up with the dock and it said there was an update waiting to be installed. Now I have a back up card. Thanks for all you do.

If the first card is corrupt then I would not use it. It should have not shown an Map update.

I would suggest to force a new download of the Maps to the 2nd SD Card since the SD Card was corrupt that you copied the files from.

It would require placing a file on the Internal 520 which I can E-Mail you.

PM me your E-Mail if you wish to go this route.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Does the TND use longitude & latitude to determine when to switch to night mode, or just longitude? It seems I have issues with it dimming too early or too late whenever I'm north of i90...

Check the new "day night auto switch offset" setting under General options. Factory default set at 10mins & you can customize it much like the eta adjustment; although it seems to only retard timing, not advance it.

Edit* What the hell, how is retard a cuss word? Mechanics use it to describe engine ignition timing every day.....Dam political correct douchenozzles...I'll go get the shotgun as the herd needs thinning
