Got a job driving right out of CDL School. During the company training period is it proper for the company to give me a photo copy of my DOT card, which the company paid for, while they hold on to the original? I'm getting conflicting input from the company and from veteran drivers.

    1. The company says they paid for it so it's their property.
    vs
    2. Veteran drivers tell me that if, upon inspection by the DOT, I produce a photocopy of my DOT card, I'll get hit with a misdemeanor and a huge fine.

Would appreciate any in sight into this. Thanks.

I've ALWAYS had the original in my possession. The company gets the copy. Sure, they paid for it...but they are YOUR medical records and YOUR credentials. Are they trying to keep your CDL only allowing you to have a copy of it until such time as you've fulfilled your contractual obligation with them thereby repaying them for your CDL school? NO! The license is YOURS, as is the ORIGINAL medical card, as well as any other certificate or credential you have to have in order to do your job.

As mentioned above, the card is issued to you. It's yours regardless of who paid for it.

Kinda curious as to what company would stoop so low as to hold a medical card hostage just to keep a driver? It makes no sense at all. The driver gets fined. Then there is points awarded for the CSA crap. It's a lose-lose scenario. No sense whatsoever.

What fantastic company is this if you don't mind me asking?

Go get your own and turn in the receipt for reimbursement...to the president of the company with a nice letter...certified.

I know....I know....little overboard but ###### wtf is wrong with some of these outfits.

Never understood what everyones deal is with the DOT med cards unless you're intrastate or something... I DO on the other hand get the fact that you want your original. It's only right

I got inspected in Alabama back in 2008. The officer asked for my medical card. I gave him the small one I keep in my wallet. He chuckled and told me he wanted to see my long form medical card. I carry mine in my truck all the time. Got a clean inspection and $100 from my company. It was a good day. Ha!

Dot still ask for it, and everytime I walk into a dmv they ask again even if I already added in to my cdl.

I possess a current and valid medical card, what happens if department of public safety pulls me over and asks for it? Run my drivers license, I'm good. I mean legally what can they really do?? Probably get hell for it. A good ol level 3 to try to find ANYTHING to #### with me, you think?
