You mean I paid all that money for truck driving school, and all I needed to do was go to uhaul, and rent a truck and trailer?
Boy,am I a dope!
ฯ:-* :-* -
So let me get this straight, a sport chassis freight liner is a tractor and not an oversized pickup?
I know several people who had their test in a fl sp and got no restrictions but that truck is made for hauling, not towing.
It is getting a bit ridiculous with these restrictions, doesn't seem to help much when you consider that up until the 80s all we had to have was a simple endorsement to drive a truck and no road test. -
Short cuts to getting a license leads to short cuts on the road. Thank God they have these restrictions now.
I love it when these NEW restrictions come out of that have been in force for years.
If you are not driving a semi then who cares about the restriction. I started with a Dodge 5500 and a 44' gooseneck. -
I am slightly confused. This is from the VA DMV website. As CDL requirements are supposed the same state to state, I assume that other states are similar;
Class A
Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more if the vehicle(s) being towed has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 10,000 pounds. Vehicles in this class include:
- Tractor-trailer
- Truck and trailer combinations
- Tractor-trailer buses
-
You all get of course here because I'll bet most are from the east. What this guy is trying to do is show up in a truck/trailer combination vehicle. Same as a semi if it meets the weight requirements. Combinations of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. Holders of a Group A license may, with any appropriate endorsements, operate all vehicles within Groups B and C.
That's how it's spelled out in my FMCSR little green handbook 383.91 Subpart F-- Vehicle Groups And Endorsements.
However, you might or might not be allowed to take a CDL Group A license skills test because there's too much missing with a simple pick-up truck even thou it meets the weigh requirements. I would suggest that anyone that is going to try to use this type of set-up read and be sure you meet all the requirements of FMCSR 383.91 to 383.135.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Bean Jr. Thanks this.

Straight out of the CDL Examiners manual:
"An applicant who passes a skills test using a combination vehicle that is NOT a Truck Tractor Semi-Trailer combination, but is otherwise equipped with a fifth wheel, will be issued a CDL with an "O" restriction."
Not sure on the L or the E as you are a pick-up truck and I don't really deal with hot-shot folk.
Hope this helps, your local friendly CDL Examiner.
