the kids are all on their own the ex's are in the rear view mirror
now I can't stay ahead of the 2001 F150 with 200000 miles on it
that gets driven 200 miles a month. That I will just fix it one more time thing got me this week for $953. I think of all you guys with trucks your making a living with. If Miss Patty knew I spent $4000 on this old POS maybe there would be another excsmith1281, tsavory, HeWhoMustNotBeNamed and 2 others Thank this. -
I'm lovin this thread! I am missing something, while being under your own authority does require more work yet somehow the challenge makes the job more interesting. I could not imagine only receiving 65% and giving the other 35% to a company that will screw you over just because they are having a bad day and don't like the look of your face

I am looking into getting back into trucking and buying all my new equipment outright. I just talked to a recruiter at Fleet Car and needless to say he was a complete jerk. I will not be hauling cars for sure, every hotshot has driven the rate down for 450 per car to 190. I need to do what you guys are doing.

I got my own authority because it seems like everyone in this industry leeches off drivers/owner ops & I figured eliminating as many of those folks as possible couldn't hurt.
Generally, I still think there is a lot of truth to that. But there are plenty of exceptions where you'd be better off running under someone else's numbers. I can't buy new Michelins for the same price @Cowpie1 can through FCC. Nor can I haul direct from Ford like @blairandgretchen through Landstar.
And while we're on the subject of "do as I say and not as I did":

Take a look around at what good customers you have near your home and buy some specialized equipment or offer some service tailored exactly for their needs. Otherwise with generic services/equipment, you'll eventually find yourself in competition with some cut rate carrier.FoolsErrand, icsheeple, mickcuster and 6 others Thank this. -
Double Yellow I support you 110% This thread is simply awesome and I am sure it will have a far reaching impact for a very long time. What services are best for monitoring the current market rate for a shipping lane?
double yellow Thanks this. -
FoolsErrand and csmith1281 Thank this.
