Somedays your the rookie and somedays your the old timer. Just depends on the company you're keeping that day.

Mr. E and I look at them like little brothers and sisters. We try to help whenever we can because when we first got out here, drivers helped us. We try to answer questions and help with stubborn equipment and spotting tricky backs. We've given away food and drink and bought folks lunch or supper. We driven folks back and forth to hotels and the grocery.
We remember what it felt like to have so much swirling around in your head and not even take home a living wage for your trouble.
Drivers get targeted by their companies, the DOT, the local LEOs, the public and all those lawyers just waiting for a driver to screw up. We have to help one another - we're all we got.tech10171968 and Cottonmouth85 Thank this. -
I can't better explain my blame comment without sounding shrill, something I don't want to do. My last few years as a driver I spent a lot of time helping young drivers. I did this because I felt obligated to pass on what I was taught by the veterans when I first started out. What irritates me though is how this industry has been romanticized by television and movies. It appears like every trucker is sitting on loads of money. This is why I get so angry when speaking to a young driver whom has fell for all of this crap. They are homesick, tired and broke. I can't tell you how many drivers i' ve spoken to like this that's trapped in their year owed. The culprits though are not the new rookies. They are all the bloodsuckers that take and take and don't add anything. I don't dare give any examples because as sure as God made grass green I will offend someone and get flamed. But the people in these forums that's been around know whom I speak.

How I view a rookie is largely determined by the rookie's behavior. I started to quote a few a you, but there's really no need, as y'all have covered ;most of the bases. It's like anything else in life: Act like you want to learn and you'll have teachers. Most of the oldtimers who can teach you will give you plenty of grief about being a noob, but they'll do it good naturedly. The guys who are just nasty don't have as much to teach as they think they do.

When I was 22 and in the drivers area eating at the Petro, these two old hands looked at me and asked. "Kid, you lost? This is truck drivers seating." I said I am a truck driver, and then they told me if I was smart I would take my truck right to the airport go home and go to college....I should of listened.
