If you were in the market for say a 2008-2012 model freightliner with around 500K what would be your choice of engine? Cummins, Detroit? Is there any major problems with these engines that would affect which one you buy?

Im in a maxxforce right now, its like owning a boat (bail out another thousand ) im going back to a detroit. Are there any annoying money grabbing issues with dd15 (dpf/scr, engine) BEWARE OF BRAND ONLY ENGINES! !!

Maxxforce is in a cesspool of its on, always in the shop at $120 an hour, Detroit or Cummins seem to be more reliable

Why do you say preferably 2010 and newer? Any issues with the 08, 09 models?

Def used to have a few more issues than the newer ones with the scr system but truth be told either way they're not so bad.

    We have a 2012 FL Coronado 122SD with an ISX 600 and a 2013 Star 4900 with a DD15.

The Cummins has been a nightmare. In first 250,000 KM it has had the injector pump replaced and then another recall fix on it, 6 injectors, EGR cooler twice, DEF pump replaced and the air compressor grenaded.
No regen or DPF issues though.

The Detroit....no failures at all. But lots of regens. None at all if I run the highway, but it doesn't like light load running in the city. If loaded light and lots of stop and go, it wants a parked regen every 8 hours.
It is getting slightly better fuel mileage than the Cummins also.

    dog-c and Prohemi500 Thank this.
