prostar cummins drag axle with trailer super single on the drag and drive super single on power axle, 10 spd clutchless.

i hate it but im stuck in it. couple things im not getting understanding here.

there is no applying feather throttle, like you could with a manual. i go to reverse to back up to a trailer, i barly press gas, 1-2 second delay, then its applying burnout tire spinnin power to the drives, and it makes me reverse so hard into trailers that it looks like im trying to remove the trailers kingpin with my tractors fifth wheel, no matter how light i try to feather the gas.

2nd issue, tire spinning, in a manual i never had this issue, this truck? its rediculous. i had to back up an incline on dry pavement and i was almost stuck because all the tires did was spin. i litterally had to do a burnout the entire 10 ft of backing up. itll even spin like that on flat ground. is that how these autos are? it doesnt burn out as much going forward but ill tell you what i would not trust driving this thing with snow on the ground.

I drove for Maverick several years ago and had some issues with the auto too. I thought the manufacturers had addressed those issues since then. Guess not. This may sound weird but try applying the brakes just a bit when taking off. That seemed to help back then. Not sure it will on newer trucks though. Worth a shot.

That pretty much sounds like my one and only time in an auto truck. Garbage IMO.

I don't have that problem in the I shift. It's pretty good at modulating the clutch with the throttle. I have run into some difficulty sliding tandems when they're sticky and heated up the clutch a bit but that's it.

    Eaton 10 ain't it?

I made it 5 months and hated every second.

Trying to back up and give it just enough fuel to engage the clutch but not so much that it takes off was impossible. Even if you found the sweet spot, as soon as you hit the smallest bump; and we all know we only get the smoothest lots; your foot would roll onto the accelerator and vroooom! off she would go; usaully when you were hitting a tight spot and would want to be going as slow as possible. Backing uphill while heavy was an exercise in frustration. I was usually rolling the wrong way or going way too fast. It's a miracle I didn't take somebody's hood while I was in that POS.

The tire spin while trying to take off is probably a tag axle issue. Even with a stick, I've had tire spin issues in trucks with tag axle that I've never had in a 6x4 truck.

From what I've read here, it seems the DD12 and Volvo Ishift are far superior, but that Eaton 10 is garbage.

Someone will come along and tell you how autos are great and how they are the best thing in trucking since power steering (which didn't ruin trucking!).

I have a 13 speed Eaton Auto. The two biggest gripes I have is backing, and Mountain driving.

There are times I give new meaning to the term Bumping a Dock...

I use manual mode in the mountains, I don't like where it shifts on its own.

I hate them, but I'm getting better with them. And they all have their own personality and sweet spot. Unfortunately, I'm often in a different truck every day so it is difficult learning an individual truck's personality. "Bumping the dock" is right. Slamming the dock or bouncing off the dock is more like it!

I prefer to drive our 2006 trucks with over a million miles on them over the brand-new autos.

I drove on ice several times. It's not as bad as one would think. Just drive sensibly like your should. :)

The Volvo has a power button that vastly improves climbing by changing the shift point from 1500 to 1800. But I also like to use the manual mode.

Going down it's pretty good at maintaining downhill speed using the auto feature of the engine brake.

The Eaton autos are the worst on the market in my opinion. Volvos setup is far superior as others have mentioned, and even the Detroit auto is much more practical. The only way ive found to somewhat smooth out the slow speed backing and whatnot is to 2 foot it. Get the clutch the start releasing and control movement with the brake. By far not the best solution but about the only one I've found. Surprised the poor king pins on our trailers are holding up
