Hey how's it going everyone? I'm doing a bit of research on companies to apply to before I graduate next month from school, and OD is #1 on my list. Everyone who works for this company seems happy and feels appreciated. I'm looking for a company to stay on with for the long haul and OD seems to be that place.

Just a few questions that I have about OD.

    1. What are the duties of a P&D driver on a daily basis? And is it hourly? If so is the $21.85 - $23 range correct??

    2. Are the trucks mostly sticks or autos?

    3. Do they hire recent CDL grads?? And if so could I qualify for a P&D position (only position they seem to be hiring for in my location)

    Thanks

You probably have a better chance on a scratcher than you do at OD, Maybe if you know someone.

How old are you and what is your record like?

I'm 26 and have a clean driving record..

I was a courier for a hospital before going to school for the last two years with no accidents or tickets..

Also had a couple of other driving jobs with no accidents either

Old Dominion hires new CDL grads for P&D.
A couple posted recently they were hired for that at the Indianapolis terminal.
Much depends on what the terminal needs.
Old Dominion has been recruiting at some CDL schools and a lot in PA.

Looks like you've done your homework. I got the same impression from all the OD drivers I talked to before I decided to apply, and the only thing I regret about it is that I didn't make that decision years earlier.

P&D is about what you'd expect. I'm not overly familiar with that side, but there aren't any odd duties that I'm aware of. Make your deliveries, get your pickups, and head back to the barn. Fuel the truck, go home. If it's a light day you might do a switch or two where you drop off an empty at a company and pull a load back to the yard. Pay is hourly, on the high side of your estimate. I don't know the exact amount, but $23+.

The trucks are all sticks, Freightliners and Volvos. Typical bare bones fleet trucks governed at 65, but they're maintained well.

Hiring is based on the needs of that location. Some places rarely hire because their only turnover comes from retirements. Others do hire CDL grads as needed. You didn't mention your location, but if you go to https://www.odfl.com/ServiceCenterLocator/ you can search for locations in your area.

    Good luck to you.

I want to make sure that I work for a company that treats it's employees well. I love what I hear about OD from other people so much that it's really the only place I'm even considering at the moment.

I checked out their website and it seems they're hiring in Chesapeake VA, which is close to where I live right now. But I'm willing to relocate if I can get on-board.

Do you know how far out they go on P&D's??

    Thanks for your reply!
    Ahhh good to know! Thanks

I'm crossing my fingers I can get on board with this company.

"blairandgretchen" that post on here used to drive for OD as a team running California turnarounds. They say it's a great company.

Just to throw it out there, OD has their own school. Free with a 9 month agreement , and you are paid to come to class by the hour. About every thing they do , they do right. Line haul supervisor called me today to wish me happy birthday (falling over the weekend). In a company this big , you do not expect touches like that.

That's really great, can't wait to hopefully work for OD...

    One more question

What are the hours like? Is it 5 days a week?

I just started with them a little over 2 months ago. They are hard to get on with, as their background checks are very through, but my record is far from perfect, and they hired me. Be very honest on your application, do not leave anything off because if you do, and they find out, it's c ya later... You're done.

It's a great place to work. The pay and benefits are very good, and you're treated with respect and not micro-managed every second of the day. (Which lets face it, that's one of the best parts about being a truck driver) Here in the west, if you come in with LTL experience, you start at $23.45 an hour, $21.30 with no LTL experience. No OT till after 60, but you won't see it. They have a "58 hour" cutoff... Meaning you hit that and it's go home see you next week. Top pay, after the September raise is $27.30 per hour and it takes 3 years to top out.

P&d is not for everyone... I've had days where I'll take a pup out with 4-5 stops, then the next day I'm dragging around a 53' with 17 stops in it. It varies so much day to day. You could run as little as 30 miles round trip for the day, or you could put on 130 miles, all depends on where they decide to send you. With being bottom man on the board, expect to do something different everyday... Which isn't a bad thing because it keeps it interesting. Expect lots of tire deliveries, lots of liftgate and inside deliveries and many places a 48'-53' trailer should not go, but you got to make it work. I swear you have to be part McGuiver to do this job haha.

Schedule will vary from barn to barn, but a 5 day workweek is pretty standard. It may be M-F, S-T, or even Tues-Sat... All depends on where they need you.

Apply man, jump through the hoops needed to get on, you won't regret the decision. OD is aiming and heading for the top... Get on now and come prosper with us.

Any other questions feel free to ask. Best of luck to you!!
