Long Haul Trucking

They have 2 pay scales for o/o. 1 being 90% if you pay for your fuel on your own but the office does all your paperwork for permits and fuel tax. The other is 87% which looks to be better. Your still paying for your own fuel but with long hauls fuel card and their discount. They still do all the paperwork for you. Most of the fees are for permits and insurance. If you lease a trl then you will have that FRE also. Which is steep but $75 comes out and is out in a account for you to help buy a trl later on down the road. The best thing to do is talk with the o/o at long haul and get his/her take. Most have been here for 4+ years. They also have a few that just run until they make enough to pay the bills for the month then go home ( from whst I hear they are out 2weeks then home for 2 weeks. ) As a o/o you work as hard as you like.

 

Knowing the lanes help. Knowing the rates and where they go only helps you decide the best direction to go. The idea is keeping your truck income high. Yes your a company driver but you csn at less learn the ropes into becoming a o/o. Just have less of a overhead.

 

I worked for long haul for about 3 months. Their equipment is top notch and the people are easy to work for. I left because I couldn't seem to make money there. They do give you choices of loads, but if the choice is crap, crap or crap it doesn't really matter what load you take. And when you do get a good load most of the time it takes forever to load it and then you only end up with an hour and a half to two hours to drive because you wasted all your time waiting. The other thing is their medical benefits, it was a $3,500 deductible per year and then they have a Health Savings Plan you put in so much and the company puts in so much up to I believe it's $500 a year. So essentially short of having your arm ripped off you are paying everything out of pocket. I don't see how that's beneficial.
The other thing that I didn't like and many others don't is the drive cams they have installed in all of their trucks, I don't mind a dashcam facing outward but having a camera facing inward I have issues with. They say they don't spy on you but they do. If you can deal with a certain amount of what I kind of consider micromanagement then you might be happy here, it's percentage based pay so if you're running empty 25% of nothing is nothing. just something to keep in mind
