If it reboots every time you start the truck there's something wrong. According to my copy of the "green book" it only mentions you can't drive more than 8 hours without 1/2 hour break. Whoever told you that there is a reg stating the engine has to be shut off the last 5 minutes of it is full of caca.

I did the update a few days ago. I haven't had an issue with the 30 minute break. However, it has cut my pre-trip time down from 10+ minutes to just 4 minutes twice now.

May drive only if 8 hours or less have passed since end of driver’s last off-duty or sleeper berth period of at least 30 minutes.

Note it says "drive." There is no requirement to take a 30 minute break if a driver is not driving. -

I tried the trick of putting it on duty after my 30 minute break without shutting the truck off and it worked. -
