    I am considering this.
I am 2150 miles from Goshen, IN. Could I make money dead heading out to IN?
How many loads do you see out to the NW?

Skypoint requires one. They pay $1.18 for non-CDL loads and $1.24 for CDL loads.
    How does that compare?

Also I saw on the Horizon site that you can do drive aways AND pull a tow trailer behind it for double revenue. Does this happen much?

Sorry I haven't answered questions for a while, my notification that there have been updates to this thread wasn't working.

First, get a 5th wheel hitch, not having one just means you will miss out on loads you will want. The expense is minimal. Second, get a CDL, again, not having one will cause you to miss loads. Granted the majority of loads do not require either, but you'll be upset with yourself if you miss out on a great load with maximum profit because you don't have it.

As for making a living at this living 2000 miles from the yard, yes it can be done, ask LGarrison. I ran a lot of loads to Sacramento and San Francisco area.

As for making $40k a year profit, can be done pretty easily if you watch your expenses, take good loads, and take care of your equipment. I have a $755 per month truck payment and $205 on insurance. I ran part time and put $2000 a month in my pocket after all expenses. The lower rates that they are paying now makes it more difficult. And yes I did stop transporting, not because I wasn't making money, but because I wasn't making as much as I wanted to on a part time basis and I didn't want to commit more time to it.

As for long bed vs short bed, if you already have a short bed I'd start with a company that allows one and get my toes wet. If you are looking to buy a new/different truck, get a long bed. It will increase your options of which company you can choose and the longer wheelbase tows better. As for dually, I think the only one that has a short bed is the Ram mega cab (if that's available on a dually), so just go with a long bed. To me, the biggest decision for a new truck comes down to fuel mileage (plus I like GMs), for some guys it is how easy is it for them to do their own repairs (Ram). Each person has their own brand prejudices, so get what you feel comfortable with.

So I have been thinking about doing some drive aways (with a tow car) to save up money to buy a truck. My dad is interested in doing this as well. We are thinking about riding in the car together out to IN (Split a hotel) and then driving back Me in a motor home pulling a trailer and him in a motor home pulling the car. How likely is it to get 3 loads (2 motor homes and a trailer) going to the same or close location?

Horizon says it should not be a problem, but you know how recruiters are.

I just noticed in a Facebook thread that Foremost is now accepting half-ton pickups of 2011 and newer and paying a whopping 1.16.
