I'm in the dark on dd15's, but on CAT engines, a failed Heui pump will send filings into the injectors and CAT requires injector replacement

    Vampire Thanks this.

There was a service bulletin recently that says the only approved way now to get these Detroits going after a filter change is by priming them only. So they must be having issues with pump failures.

That's just so idiot mechanics don't pre fill filters like the old days. Unfiltered fuel can easily contain very damaging particles in a high pressure fuel system.

I read that post too, it was about the lack of lubricants in either bio diesel or ultra low sulfur fuel that tears up the fuel pumps leaving the metal shavings in the system if I rememember right. Either way it sounded like Detroit was aware and trying to figure it out

The prefilter always has metal shavings in it, seems a bit odd. Once there was a piece of plastic film the size of a quarter in there. o_O

I went there over 15 years ago with a compressor and ECM problem with my Detroit, after that I never got anything done in Denver period. Sorry for being off topic.

The high pressure fuel pumps can fail, the tell tale shavings are magnetic not aluminum though.

I think the Ali swarf comes from holes drilled in the fuel tanks for apu and heater feeds etc. The first time i saw my gauze filter full of it I nearly soiled myself, but 600km later I'm much calmer but I do run a magnet around the filter when I change it out as apparently they shed the magnetic filings for a while before it all goes downhill and ruins everything down the line.
