Paranoid about hitting other things/vehicles with truck

    I started a driving job driving a 5 ton a while back. I get extremely paranoid about hitting things with tail swing when I'm turning at a light, driving in parking lots, etc. I only have a few months experience with using a class 3. Did anybody else have this issue when they first started truck driving? Is it a needless concern? Maybe I shouldn't be driving because I get paranoid I could have hit something while turning or navigating tighter spaces with the front end of the truck (or when turning right for example and the back left side of the truck swinging out and hitting something) without hearing or knowing it.

    You will build up confidence as you drive more, most of us were scared ####less of having accidents and so.

    I used to be in the same boat. The only way you'll gain confidence is to do it successfully. As you get comfortable with the truck and judging distances you won't have any trouble. Mirrors are your friend. If properly adjusted you should be able to judge how much clearance you have for your tail swing.

    Being concerned about hitting something is normal when you first start driving a truck.
    Just don't be in a hurry like this cool cat!!

    26 yrs and I still get paranoid just not as bad.
    Its a good thing that your aware and concerned about it.

    But when I started I had that tail swing concern. Just don't jack the wheel so tight and it won't happen. Make you're turn smooth

    It is ok that you have these concerns-it shows that you take your job seriously. I do almost all the OS/OW where I work. Often times I will drive a route ahead of time in my own car with a fiberglass pole, tape measure and notepad-a total recon on my own time. Some of my co-workers call me paranoid. I can live with that.
