Why? If I apply to a trucking company what do they really care about? Insurability. Drug free. Experience. None of these are effected by your willingness to go above and beyond. In my experience I'm hired to do a job. That's all the boss cares about, is if that job gets done with no mess ups. They could care less that I polish my wheels once a week and keep the interior spotless. They could care less that I bust my butt to get done with a drop a half hour earlier than most take. When I apply for a job it never asks if you're willing to do two jobs. So I just do what I'm hired for. Took me five years of working hard to figure out that it isn't recognized or appreciated.

If you load a heavy load, do you take initiative and weigh your wagon or do you wait for the deskjockeys?
If you unload a nasty load, do you take initiative and get a trailer wash out, or do you wait for the deskjockeys?
"But Six, my boss wont reimburse me."
If you are punished for initiative, do you take the initiative and jump ship asap, or do you wait for the deskjockeys from that point forth?
People that sit around in slums, refusing to take initiative to better their situation and waiting for a deskjockey to send government cheese are called what?
What are they called when they have the same mentality driving a rig?spyder7723, ChaoSS and scottlav46 Thank this. -
Your "job" is to safely drive the truck to pick up and deliver freight ON TIME and undamaged. If you're sitting there for 3 hours waiting for a "mechanic" to fix something you could have taken care of in 15 minutes, you are 2 hours and 45 minutes closer to being "late". Might not be that big of a deal pulling general freight in a drop-and-hook scenario where the customers aren't waiting on you. However, in a more lucrative driving job where customers need you to be where you are supposed to be WHEN you are supposed to be there...or in certain "specialized" segments where curfews and travel restrictions are in place, those 2 or 3 extra hours it took to get something simple "fixed" caused you to be a day late...which meant the customer had to pay a crane and crew to sit on their thumbs for a day.
Suddenly, learning how to take care of the "simple" things starts to make sense...unless of course you have no interest in ever rising above the mediocrity that runs rampant in this industry.cnsper, Slowpoke KW, ChaoSS and 3 others Thank this. -
My personal view is it is a difference in the way a person conducts him/her self with others on the road, truckstop and shipper or consignee. I'll expound, if you got a guy trying to pass you going one mile an hour faster, take your foot off the juice four ten seconds let the dude roll by. Yea it's kinda of pain but that two truck rolling road block is holding up a ton of of other truckers. Steering wheel holder not a trucker. The person that will park in the fuel isle to get a drink and take a 30 when the lot is empty, not a trucker because they don't care about the truckers that need to juice up and get down the chip. It is a person that is not versed or does not care about professional courtesy. There are thousands of examples, but bottom line it is a driver that is not a pro and by that I do not mean a pro in the craft, but one who does not or will not try to act like a professional. You have people that golf and you have golfers, people that fight and fighters, people that truck and truckers. Without spewing an essay, that's my cut and dry on a holder and a trucker.

I'm going to tell you straight the f up why I'm a steering wheel holder and proud..
I have ptdi college schooling to drive.. a diesel mechanic course was also available but I didn't want to be a mechanic I wanted to be a driver..
I'll out shift you I'll even pass you in a no truck lane if you're scared of winding turns driving is what I do..
If the truck breaks down and you want to be Mr ### kisser and fix it yourself that's cool but idgaf.. I'm not a mechanic and yes you can be held liable for trying and causing further dmg
I actually have been passing the crap out of people on i40 all week in NC if a swift flat bed flew passed just to go 60 after them it was me making time not giving a #### bout nothing but point a to b and my load securementDominick253 Thanks this. -
While you are still such delivering standard freight stuck working for an average or crappy company, I'll be out here working for an excellent company doing specialized work and making real money. But go ahead and talk about how proud you are to be a steering wheel holder and nothing more.spyder7723 Thanks this. -
