some Wal-Mart Distribution Centers has you drop your trailer in a dock door and bobtail to bobtail parking and have your cb radio on channel 5 or something, and you wait in your truck until they call you

    Newbie Driver here...

    I love my tech... Period.
I love my auto, iPhone, GPS, etc.

I have used the Waze App, in the past.
I love Truckers Path Pro... And Weather Apps.

    BUT...

I too believe a standard CB should be required minimum equipment for all CMV and even pre installed by the OEM. (subject to upgrading)

As mentioned above... CB is legal to use while on the road and conveys hyper local information much quicker than any App...

Yes, I know... Tech is fast but to have to have someone willing to safely type in "there's a gator on the east bound of I-5" and then for someone else in the area to notice it's in their area, even if alerted, to then have to take their eyes off the road to receive the warning and then react, is not efficient... Nor safe.

Now compare that to hearing "east bound east bound east bound brake check break check break check" and instantly coming to an elevated alert status. No comparison.

Now I am NOT an old time "trucker" reminiscing about the good old days and the brotherhood of the CB... I personally think there is way too much moaning, groaning, and blaming happening on the CB frequencies today...

But as for "boots on the ground" hyper local information about traffic and weather... I'm keeping a CB in my cab... WITH my iPhone!!!

Not to mention talking to others at the Truck Stop and laughing about something (sometimes even the complainers are fun to listen to or mock... lol)

And the other day I was actually at a drop where the customer used a CB to communicate with the drivers... It worked very well and efficiently too ... And I didn't need to give out my personal cell phone number to a stranger.

So I love my tech... and that includes my CB!!!

When you hit a snowstorm in Laramie and the wind is whipping you around, visibility is ####, and you're boxed in by 15 other trucks, pull your stupid Waze app out to see the brake check coming a mile up the road.

    Go ahead, I dare ya.

Yes, that does happen and there are a lot of moaner, groaners, and complainers out on the airwaves, that is true... Just like here.

But there is also a lot of good information available to you when you need it too... It's not perfect, but neither are apps. Two different creatures.

    Stay Safe,

I haven't used a CB in a truck in the past 5 years. And I have gotten by just fine too much BS from the newbreed crowd. Fussing fighting laying blame on one or the other for stupidity and somebody always wanting to pull on the shoulder of the road and see who's the bigger man. Or some cracker head just wanting to get on there and make stupid noises like some waterhead. Thank God for XM. If you're looking ahead and paying attention you will see that tiregator in plenty of time. If there is a backup ahead sure I'll give you that one, you might can avoid it. But what's the use you'll still end up running into something that will slow you down. To each their own I don't knock anyone that has a CB but 25 years out here, I have heard all the BS coming through a speaker that I care to hear.

Waze is a great resource to get warnings of hazards and speed traps. You get warnings of traffic, vehicles and animals on the side of the road, potholes, objects in travel lanes, etc etc. Obviously a trucker should not use it as their sole source of navigation because it will happily take you under a low bridge, etc.

Back in the 70's you couldn't get a word in edgewise on the CB. Truckers would help each other. Of course we also had the guys who would transmit nonsense but that's sorta like real life, eh? It's really sad now that all you hear are guys complaining about another guy who cost them maybe an extra 30 seconds getting out of the truck stop. I can drive all day now and hardly hear a peep from the CB.

Having said that, I hate driving without a CB on board. I find that when the SHTF a lot of guys will still speak up with useful info.

My advice: Run Waze but install a quality CB and leave it on all the time with the squelch turned up so that you are not bombarded with distant transmissions. CB could be considered old school but it just might save your life some day. Also, like others have said in this thread, I've been to a number of places that use the CB to move trucks on/off the docks
