If you look at complaints that dodge had in 2004 through 2007 with the Sprinter, it confirms that you just said. the service didn't catch up on the dealer level until just before they stopped selling them. Dodge/Chrysler/Fiat has always had an issue Just because they market the vehicle doesn't mean they know how to properly service it.
I remember my dad taking a car into the dealer in late 1967, his '67 Imperial he got in '66. It went in because it was running rough and they screwed up the carb so badly that the mileage went down to 4 and it ran like crap. They tried to rebuild it and messed it all up because the guy rebuilding the carbs wasn't trained on that model carb. He had to take it to a shop near our home he was told about by the gas station owner across the street from them. This was a shop where a bunch of Chrysler engineers worked on Chrysler vehicles on the weekends to make some money for their racing habit. They rebuilt the carb, upgraded some things on it (I watched the guy in amazement) and that car ran flawlessly from that point on.
