What's the pay , and benys like ?

 

Feast or famine. OTR drivers have better luck than local. They advertise $50K+ for pay. I think that $1,000 per week gross is probably a high estimate average across the board - some go getters prob do much better, many are prob closer to $800. They do offer a $600/week guarantee which is nice, not alot but at least you know you will eat. Benefits are not the best although they do offer the standard stuff. The medical is expensive. Don't remember details as I am on wife's insurance.

 

Drivers were told that the rates were going to increase this year, well they are, but they dropped the percentage that the driver gets so you get paid the same while they make more money. In fact they dropped the percentage 3 weeks before they rates are set to increase. So the drivers were working for all that time doing the same job, but for less money. You get paid every 2 weeks and your lucky to clear $1,500. If you get a rash of bad weather your checks is miserable. I would stay away from them as they tell you what percentage you get of the load, but you NEVER know what the load pays. They hide the numbers from the driver and tell you all the thing you want to hear. The signs for them saying 50k-100k might be true for the 1% but if your there less than 15 years forget it. All the good runs are taken and you get the shaft. Some guys make $80,000 but they are running hard, gone 2-3 weeks at a time, hauling butane or propane. Cement is sorry when it comes to pay. Dump might be better if you get a good amount of loads and propane pays little unless you are lucky and get the long runs. And I mean really lucky(i.e. they are desperate to move loads and stuff you in a truck to get it done). Benefits are alright if your single, but climb exponentially if you have a family. You don't know what you're doing until 5-6pm the night before so you can't plan anything. In fact your married to the job. 10-12 hour days the norm. Dump starts around 3-4am and goes to 2-3 pm. Cement and propane are all over the place. Working nights and around the clock, fighting the e-log is normal. The equipment is nice, but the idea that they aren't transparent about what the load pays and the fact they shafted the cement guys with the drop in percentage should be a huge red flag.

 

Anyone on here working at Puryear care to up date what it’s like now to work there?

 

...well unless something changes I’ll be in orientation next week. So far you’ll do a lot of pre hire paperwork online...mostly company policies and what can get you terminated. You’ll take a drug test at the closest Lab Corp. Also you’ll send in a photo copy of you license, medical and TWIC card.

 

Did you follow through with Puryear? I'm considering appyling, what's it like driving for them; pay, home time, etc?

What state will you be in and what are you looking to pull…end dump, dry bulk, or hazmat? Also day cab or sleeper truck?
