Why did you get into trucking?

I am 27 years old I didn't graduate from school and when the oilfield boom went down this is my only hope to get some decent money. I just my cdl last month so hopefully everything goes really good for me

 

I'm on the road because Walmart fired me from a good job two weeks before Christmas 2010 and there is zero job growth in El Paso unless you're a temp employee or working in a call center willing to get less than $8.50/hour so I went back into a job I knew would pay more.

 

Because no other job on earth is like this. I grew up around a lot of old school produce haulers and steel haulers. My dad and my gramps were drivers along with 4 or 5 uncle's. 1st truck I remember being in was my dads old 9670 315 formula

 

Any half okay apartment in a lot of cities is what? $800? Add electric, internet, tv etc that's $1000 a month.

As a truck driver i could spend every weekend at a hotel and it could would cost me less.

Being a truck driver is a good way to save money being you don't need a car to drive to work or a house to go back to after work.
Yeah living in a truck isn't great but I'd rather live in a truck and have money to enjoy my life rather than being broke.

 

It all started in 1974 as a teenager watching the show Movin On. I did a bunch of different jobs for years including a stint in the military then finally got into trucking.

I get bored easily. At other jobs I got restless and irritable driving the same commute, working the same space around the same faces and going home to the same shack day after day. Every day on the road I say to myself, I belong out here.

 

I didn't buy the 50k the first year talk from my truck school recruiter. Been at it about five years and just now starting to break that level.

 

It's possible depending on the company.
Prime for one example pays .445 per mile for noobs plus bonuses.
110000 miles in a year should be good for $50k right there.

 

Its something I can do without a diploma.
'15 was my first full year trucking and I made 50k driving local, averaged about ten hours a day. This year I should clear over 55k and next year if I'm with the same company I should be making 60k. Where I'm at the median income is 30k.

Plus it pisses my dad off that I'm not doing something more lady like and I enjoy irritating him whenever I can
