As Owner Operators we often come across potential business but the follow-up required can be a challenge. And if they are looking for any kind of volume or commitment then you just have to pass.

Any working with a broker that you can pass leads to, get first right of refusal on this freight if it closed and get a percentage of the margin for what you have passed off?

Work with many O/O's that run freight through us. Usually because we are loading them right back to the same area. Works out well for both sides.

How does that work on your side? Do they give you "leads" and you give them a portion of the margin?

They have first shot at any loads at the full rate. Or any that they would broker out themselves, then they would receive a split. If it turns into a decent lead maybe a bird dog fee. No one is going to pay an ongoing margin for leads unless they are actively working the account.

@wichris - you are a carrier/broker. How many people do this with you and are they leased to you or outside?

Our 3PL pays a small cut ongoing for passing the leaded and not managing the account. Will pay more for active account management but not booking the loads or trucks.

This always seemed like a good way to go for independents and a broker. Vast majority of the customers a single truck couldn't cover it but this would give a great of getting direct paying freight plus earn a little extra.

Some are leased, most are outside carriers. Like everything, some work it hard, others are a one time shot. Many times they will find something a little higher and you never hear from them again. Even though they are the one who set the rate in the beginning. Others have been doing the same load they brought to you for years. The only thing that makes it worthwhile for either side is if it connects with something else you have. It isn't sustainable as a means of growth. If they feel slighted they will take the info to someone else. For someone with no customer freight it can be worthwhile.

In this day of electronic everything...relationships as described in this thread should be more prominent. This would eliminate the rats like TQL.
