Those programs aren't a joke for someone that's unemployed or under employed and want to work. A person that's been driving a box truck in the city needs familiarization with the rules and regulations for OTR; it's not that simple any more. Sure, he can find some fly-by-night outfit on Craigslist that will throw him under the bus if there's an incident. Better to get trained correctly and then move on to whatever he really wants in 3-6 months.
Going back OTR from local

When the HR department sends a verification of employment they ask how many miles you run in a week and if it is OTR. If you tell them you were OTR and your current company tells them you were local it would look bad. -
Some carriers that both train and hire experienced drivers, have what amounts to an evaluation period with a trainer. If you can prove you can drive the truck blindfolded and have good safety habits to your trainer, chances are he'll cut you loose in just a few weeks to solo. So, ask if they have a "refresher program" or "accelerated evaluation" program. I imagine most do.
But companies want to know you can handle new eLogs, trip plan, manage your time correctly, drive on snow/ice, etc. I understand you used to drive OTR and that will count for something, but you may still need to ride with someone just to learn the way the carrier's operations work, and messaging and eLog system assuming you've not dealt with it or have been away from it for a while.
For a carrier to put you out solo right out of the gate, that want to be able to call somewhere you've worked in the last 12-18 months that sort of matches what they do (OTR 48 or at least large regional) and see that they have nothing bad to say about you.Chinatown Thanks this. -
RESPECTFULLY SPEAKING, you absolutely positively must swallow your pride to get the job you want and "get on the road". You must do it, you can do it.
God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!crb Thanks this. -

It's not "training" so much as it is an extended road test by someone who may or may not be qualified to road test.

Make the best of it. In fact maybe you can charge the trainer for your advanced level backing techniques class.
-
Why are you wanting to return to otr from being local, if I may ask?
