You mean something doesn't go wrong every 5 minutes like on the show? Or how they play up a very minor chrome bender into the likes of a major accident? Yes, I can handle it.
Is what they say true, that you can make $40K in the 2.5 months the road is open? How do you start looking for a job up there? Do they hire US nationals?

Never mind, I found what I was looking for:
However it says, "We only hire Canadian citizens or people who have the legal right to work in Canada." How would I go about to obtain the right to work in Canada? They don't say anything about they pay though.
Anyone else interested in doing this? Applications can be submitted for the 2009 Ice road in October.Last edited by a moderator: Aug 14, 2008

Now Huey ... that's a real trucker right there. A roll model even. -
The dramatization and exaggeration of this program is really corny. I want to do this for the money not to be on the show. -
Is drew the whining one who's tractor keeps breaking down?

Ok, here's the REAL story
Everything is dramatized to keep the IDIOTS watching!
Those dolts on the show were BANNED off the Ice Road north of Yellowknife for their unprofessional conduct, History Channel was told by the owners of the road...Don 't EVER come back here, seems they were told it was going to be a DOCUMENTARY. I'm sure that they will be told not to come back to wherever they managed to find themselves last year.
And NO they don't hire anyone but Canadian citizens or Landed Immigrants, so that's the only way you could work on those roads.
And I seriously doubt you would be hired anyway...What experience do you have? Do you even know how to drive in a snowstorm or know what to do when a freak Northern storm blows up & you can't see the the hood of your truck, let alone the end of it? Are you a mechanical wizard? Do you know how to handle 70 below windchills? Winter's down there are nothing compared to what we get up here...Can you handle cold that doesn't come above -60 for weeks on end? -
Kat, you're saying Alex, Drew, Hugh, TJ, Rick and Jay were banned from coming back?
Hunter -
What did they do to be banned from the road?
No I'm not a "mechanical wizard" but that is why you should work for someone who runs decent equipment. Besides what are mechanics for?
Besides how hard can running on an ice road at 20MPH be? This year's show on the Mackenzie river they showed a newb with ZERO experiance to speak of being trained by Hugh. If they hire newbs I don't think they'll have an issue hiring someone with 3 years experience, half that running midwest to west coast in the USA. -
i dunno about drew. i mean you really have to wonder about a guy that has THAT much bad luck - in a continuous streak. i've known a lot of guys like that and he strikes me as the type that cannot help but screw himself every time he turns around.
hugh ... hugh's an #######, no doubt about it ... but the man knows how to run.
as for the show being corny/dramatized - i have no argument with that. you know, it probably has the POTENTIAL to be a really good documentary BUT what really ruins it is a) the announcer, b) the corny sound effects (like the truck horn, etc.), c) the under-the-ice CG shots, d) the artificially created suspense ... i could go on. What would make the show great is just a camera, no cheesy hollywood crap and a lot of time with the truckers. doesn't have to even be on an ice road ... i'm pretty sure some of the guys that run otr in the lower 48 have some cool stories to tell!
OR ... they could send a camera out with WildKat. 30 Years of experience (she'd whip hugh's ###), good stories to tell, etc. that'd be a real documentary.
