Truck Driving School or Company Training?

go to a local community college if you can afford it and have the time.

stay away from england and crst (trainies training).

Transport America, Roehl, Schneider all have reasonable programs... but they own you and you pay more than you would have otherwise.

Well if you've got the money (about $4000) to spare, go for it independently.

Myself, I don't have the money, so I am going with Driver Solutions. You get into a 1 year contract with a company and end up owing $6000 if you quit before the year is up, but if you can stick it out you don't pay anything.

 

A lot of the schools can finance your schooling. I would go that option, as you will be able to move on after 3 to 6 months if the company just isn't a good fit for you. Driving school recruiters, trucking company recruiters, and military recruiters must all go to the same school, as there aren't people out there that can give you the sunshine better!

I dunno. Financing to me sounds a lot like putting your whole education on a credit card. Just one more bill to pay down, you know?

Way I see it, if you pay on your own, that's $4000-$4500 right off the bat that you definitely have to pay back. But if you go through a company sponsored program, it's $6000 that you don't have to pay back, unless you flake out and quit the company before your year of indentured servitude is up. And since you need a year experience to really open doors for you, I think a company sponsored training program makes more sense.

 

Then you should know how to talk to recruiters, one smoke blower to another, lol.

You are forgetting options. Always good to have a back up plan. You can if the ball is in your court. Many places offer tuition reimbursement and some (TMC) used to offer it even if they were not your 1st co out of school.

Also, look into WIA and other grants down at the unemployment office. Grants are great (speaking from experience) - the downside being, of course, that the carrier won't reimburse you for the tuition...
