I just moved down to New Braunfels, Texas. I saw an ad for Southern Tank Transport, and I was curious about what kind of money that can be made in hauling dry bulk. I've worked local for years so I'm looking for jobs that keep me home. I've worked 12 years in LTL, but the P&D grind really wore on me. None of the LTL's in the area are hiring right now for line haul except Estes, and that is combo local/regional, and I haven't contacted them to find out how long I would be out if it were regional. Overnight would be fine, but not all week.

Well idk about southern but sunset company guys up in dfw are bringing $1200+ week right now in busy season. With a $750 guarantee just to be available to work.
Think they have a terminal down there too.

I made more money pulling a Dry Bulk than I have any other kind of trailer I pulled and was home most nights at least for a while, course I worked a lot of weekends. Sometimes can be long hours but never worried about backhauls. Id deadhead to load then bring it back and unload it. Now and then it would get rejected for being too damp and Id have to haul it back to where I loaded it but that didnt happen much. You being in New Braunfels, youd probably haul some to the same company I hauled for. They used to have a plant there- Owens Corning. That was a gravy run for me.

Well, I hesitated on applying at Southern for a while to apply at other places to see what I could get. In 11 days I didn't get one bite. 2 days ago I applied at Southern, and within a day and a half, I got hired. I go in today at 2:30 to start with the drug screen and DOT physical, and Monday morning start training. I've never done dry bulk so I hope it's going to be a good money maker for my wife and I. Is between $55, and $65,000/yr. a realistic expectation if your willing to work?

Should be able to do that without any trouble. Just keep in mind our work most of the money is made from June to November depending on weather. Maybe a little different down the road a few hours though.

I'm just really happy that they called. I was starting to wonder if I was going to have to go OTR again. Plus they are here in New Braunfels, so I won't have to commute to SA. I know that the seasons will differ, but once we get our debts handled, and our house in Wyoming sold, we will be able to get on solid ground. Hopefully since we are further South, the weather will keep things from slowing down as much.

Good luck with your new job. I have been running dry bulk for about two years and I really enjoy it. Gets you out of the truck and your not just driving all day long.

Thank you DMAX, I really appreciate that. This will be something new for me. I've done mostly LTL. Not just being in the truck is a real plus.

Their CSA score looks like they have equipment maintainance issues. It could be just drivers not doing their jobs, but they are 1 point above the National average. I'm going to mention this on Monday, and see how they react. I'm not sure what to do about this. I should have looked a little deeper. There wasn't an interview, just a call saying I was hired, and to come in, grab paperwork, and go for my physical and drug screen.

Keep in mind most company's keep pneumatic trailers for a very long time because they are so expensive to replace. Having older trailers can affect maintenance scores. You are correct the issue could also be poor pre trip inspections as well. Most of our trailers are old 1990's. New pneumatic trailer run $130,000

    crazeydude Thanks this.
