A couple months ago, a thread was started about open deck drivers getting killed. There was one person in the thread that saw an opportunity. He wanted to attempt to stupidproof open deck trucking. When he was told that his idea was stupid also, he got offended (yeah, he will get over it or die).

We say all the time that Stupid has a harder time hiding with an open deck trailer. The picture in post 2088 shows someone being lazy. In this business, lazy gets you killed.

An old photo. Trailer broke, upside down in the ditch, wheeled vehicle with the wheels STILL on the deck. Awesome evidence for proper securement. Bad things happen. When they happen, would you rather your load be upside down in a ditch and still on the trailer or sitting off the trailer, or in your cab with you?

It's worlds easier to keep a wind blade on a trailer than a Grove crane. It's much easier to secure a coil than a blade. Which one brought their A Game to every game they played? If you slack with coils, you will slack with blades, if you slack with blades you will slack with big excavators and cranes.

If I remember correctly, the kingpin or 5thwheel failed on the jeep of the 13 axle. If the load had come off the trailer, this would have cast doubt on the driver being competent. "Did the load shift first and made the equipment fail?"

So I delivered today. I delivered the rear electrical room for shovel #2 (Last pic 4). The rear room on the machine, to give some semblance of scale, is the white box on top of the counterweight at the back and the dark vertical line is the seam for the next piece. Yes, they are that BIG! The bucket is 58yards, which apparently is about 200,000lbs of ore per scoop! Four scoops overloads a Cat 797 400ton mine dump truck!
I started moving shovel parts in 1998, yup I mean 1998, the year. Finally, after all these years, 17, hauling God knows how many parts loads of these things (I've moved 12 dippers/buckets alone), I FINALLY got up close to a (almost) complete one.
Sometimes I feel like I work for IKEA, because almost everything I haul has a some assembly required portion to it, but I rarely see the final product.
BTW, they take months to assemble...(4-5)
I brought the dipper bucket (post 1337) & handle (no pics/posts) in for this one (shovel #1), they are about the only parts NOT on the machine yet (Pic 3)
Oh yeah, a P&H Boss 4100C weighs about 3,108,924 lbs, with a full dipper of coarse...lmao!

No need to plus one pilot car trying to block three lanes of traffic is near impossible with the idiots on the road today.

 

Hammer, Does that unit have what they call the in house machine shop...
I was thinking some of those big units had a some what limited mini shop in them...

 

I get to head back up there for Saturday with more hitachi shovel parts.

 

I can't seem to get done with bridge decks and beams this year. Another one brought back to the yard for delivery on Friday. Get to move some loaders tomorrow though. 68 feet long and 59k. Just a baby one.
