Hi, I am reading up on A&R in California and they have a COEET or Conditional Offer of Employment Evaluation Test, do you know what that involves?

I assume that's what they are calling the physical capacity test now. It's basically lifting up to 50 lbs, grip strength test and riding an exercise bike for 20min. Also drug screen and DOT physical. If you ask a recruiter they will go over all the details.

@DMAX66 I am talking to them now and from your input it sounds pretty good. Are there any negatives you can advise me of?

I'm schedule to meet with the Charlotte terminal manager next week so hoping things go well. I'm really REALLY ready to get as far away from dry vans as possible and everything I've read about A&R seems good. I do have a question for current drivers... regarding miles.

What kinda mileage are you picking up weekly? Also, on average, what's the loaded miles vs empty miles you're seeing? Looking like if it's 50/50 I'll actually be taking a pay cut. Just curious. It's certainly not a deal breaker.

Oh yeah, any insight into the Charlotte terminal? Do they tend to run certain trucks there? Never driven a 13spd or a Super 10 so might be interesting.

    Thanks.

(I'm trying to read through posts about A&R but my service is being an ahole. I'm sitting at a rest stop in WV that is usually a black hole for me...)

I can answer a few of your questions.
    1) Are you looking to be a system (OTR) driver? If so most of the guys in the system get over 2000 MI a week. Also consider that you may be driving less miles doing dry bulk as opposed to van, but you will make more money with dry bulk because at A&R you are paid $45 to load and $45 to unload. The $45 basically covers the first two hours loading or unloading. Anything above 2 hrs you are payed $22 an hour. For example one week I drove 1396 loaded miles and 800 empty miles and my gross pay was about $1,350. Typically system drivers are loaded 80% of the time. I mostly ran regional so it was a lot of out and back freight and I was closer to 50/50.

I have never been to the Charlotte terminal but I have heard good things. The most common trucks A&R has is the flat top Peterbuilt 379. Most have 13 speeds, some have super 10s. The new Cascadias are automatics. If you get a 13 speed just look up a you tube video on how to drive one and you should pick it up right away. That's how I did it.

I just recently quit A&R and I am going to Hoffman Transportation to haul dry bulk as well. I don't really have anything bad to say about A&R. They always took care of me and I made good money. The only reason I am moving to Hoffman is because they pay more, and they pay for heath insurance 100%.

I ran out of the Morris terminal and the only real negative I had was long waits for clean trailers. The tank wash in Morris is way too small for the amount of volume that comes out of that terminal. But they should be starting construction on a new tank wash in Joliet soon.

    TruckerVinny Thanks this.

I'll probably ride out out my first year at current employer but A&R remains high on my list. Thanks @DMAX66

A&R Transport, Columbus, OH. 14 Months Later -
November 2016 - Trained for two weeks with trainer doing local work around Ohio then went to HQ in Morris, IL for orientation. They were trying a reverse setup giving them a chance to evaluate a driver and the driver a chance to get exposed to the work before full commitment on both sides. I thought it worked out OK.
After orientation I was off and running until my 90 evaluation. After many stressful days, minor issues and many calls back to my trainer I managed to survive. This job is challenging in many ways, tough at times and frustrating quite often in the beginning. You have to work hard and find a calm place to balance out.

After I passed the 90 day evaluation I started running as hard as possible. I took every mile I could get. I had my share of issues along the way but my skills were improving everyday.

I suggest at least a year of driving like they want. You need to be a proficient driver to get into some of the deliveries. Also, this is a driver/operator position so you don't want to be still learning driving skills on top of operator part.

I'd be more than willing to talk to anyone looking to come aboard. Good Luck
    Vinny -out
