QUOTE="Digit, post: 1747096, member: 59296"]Haven't read all the posts ( too many of them). What most i have read haven't said is why these linear amps are illegal. Or the fact they really don't need one over a 30 watt. Though I have seen them for sale as high as 300watts. You get a driver sitting in a suburban area at a truck stop all weekend on his cb radio with his 100 watt 0r 200 watt "kicker" and he is broadcasting 30 miles away possibly more. It improved his broadcasting abilities, but not the receiving qualities. Plus he is most likely "walking" on peoples phone lines, television sets, baby monitors etc etc. It is this interruption upon "civilians" (lack of better words) that made the fcc make them illegal for citizen band radios. Also has to do with the ham radios, which require a license to use. As to the actual original question "why do they use them" b/c they can (kiss) and b/c they have not been caught and fined which can be as high as 25, 000$[/QUOTE]

They work great on a.m. if your technician knows what he's doing but they are useless on Side Band

Most radios have a noise floor about three-tenths of a microvolt making it difficult to hear anything over 10 miles away. There's only two technicians in the country that can drop the noise floor low enough to make it possible to hear a 4 watt radio 30 miles away and unfortunately most drivers don't have a clue.

It's pretty bad when somebody has to run 200 Watts to talk 30 miles when 4 watts will do the trick with the right antenna with a properly tuned receiver on the other end with a decent antenna
