If u got the Capitol and don't have to borrow, or borrow much. U gotta get the right truck. If u get the wrong truck your plan will go upside down real quickly. What's the right truck u ask? Gotta do the research and earn your stripes. With your limited personal experience your going to have to rely on your father and learn real quickly. It's possible but not as turn key as u may expect. There will be repairs that will be needed possibly at odd times of the night while you were sleep. Who knows. But all that is just part of the ticket. My advice is keep your overhead low as possible if u decide to follow through with this. And develop a passion for the industry. Study study study. There's hundreds of posts on this site alone to read through and study through your own discernment.

I have to wonder what your dad would have to say about this idea? Trucking lesson # 1 - dispatchers are not inherently trustworthy. I know I didn't go out and buy my truck because a dispatcher told me it would be a great idea.

    Really negative nancy?

Look dude, you learn things that are real and harmful by listening to negative comments but ...

    That said.

    You will fail.

    I almost guarantee it.

    Why?

Because this is a business and most are just lucky.

You have to first know first hand what's what, not depend on knowing a driver. Then you have to get into your mind that there is an inherit liability that can wipe you put. This isn't a passive income source, it has to be an active every day thing unless you know how to set it up right.

Oh yea u gotta love the respect you'll probably get from a driver that knows you've never done what he's done. That's one of the reasons why mega carriers have such communication and performance issues. Got some college kid telling a life long trucker how to do his job. Becomes real pissy quick

I have been there both as a driver getting 50% and as a contractor paying 50%.

In most 1 truck operations, there isn't enough money for both to make a living. If you are not driving the truck, it will be down for repairs, and not making money. That amount you quoted per week is what happens when everything goes right. It is not average.

As o/o, you survive, as driver, you starve.

It's not worth it for the driver I have drove 50/50 after the fuel. Which that basically is saying you and driver pays for fuel. So for example in a simple settlement if the the truck gross 3000 even then your driver burns 1000
I have drove 50/50 after the fuel. Which that basically is saying you and driver pays for fuel. So for example in a simple settlement if the company you are leased on to gives provides a fuel card and the truck gross 3000 even then your driver burns 1000 in fuel that means the settlement will be 2000. Minus your other deduction such as Bob tail insurance, occ/acc, then your making a mistake by getting your plates through them because that is a deduction each week. So just say your deductions are 100 dollars that brings the settlement to 1900 that means you take 950 and your driver takes 950. And every month you will have maintain that equipment and pay that truck note. I drove 50/50 and it was not worth it for me because I wanted the whole settlement instead of spitting it so I bought my own truck and drive it. So I'm not going to say it isn't worth it to do it but it's really to each its own I know a guy that's running about 35 trucks on the 50/50 split and he is living good so it's on you.

best investment is buying a few cows, the 50/50 split feeding. Then later on you get to enjoy a fresh thick steak on the grill.

You need to learn the biz by being part of it. So many outsiders think trucking is the golden egg. Buy a cheap truck, pay some no brain goof to drive it and the money will roll in. The only ones telling you to go for it are your buddies that have no better clue than you. Don't do it.
