Hello everyone. Tires have just 185k miles on them. Both drives on the right side look this way. Left side is ok. Truck is a 2016 Cascadia, and those are the original tires. There is a random vibration on the right side. Steers are brand new and balanced, also not a trailer issue. Anyone has an idea what's going on? Thanks in advance. Jacek.

That's how the caps get on our day cabs in Phoenix.
My theory is yard dog spinning tires, or small rocks get wedged in tread, then when run on super heated highway the tread breaks off from the pressure of the rocks jammed into the grooves.
    Just a theory.
Let me know when you find out.

Too much throttle under loss of traction. When the tire spins chunks break off, they call it chunking.

It doesn't take much, a slight slip from a bump or gravel on the road...

Maybe they use harder rubber to decrease the rolling resistance and this is a side effect.

Looks like its from spinning tires.

Spinning tires, hitting the rumble strip pretty often? If it's always the same driver I would say its some kind of bad driving habit. Also check DOT number on all the tires. Were they made in the same batch? If so then definitely something to do with the driver. If the two that are chipping were made at a different time then there's a slight possibility that the compounds were off slightly in that batch.

Thank you guys. That gives me an idea, what happened. Altought you can't be spinning front drive's unless the diff is locked, right?

I was gonna say spinning the tires on takeoff but that rumble strip riding theory might have some merit to it.

    No.

All 4 wheel ends have power all the time.
