Have you ever heard the acronym K.I.S.S.? If not, it means keep it simple stupid! (Just joking, I'm not calling you stupid) I fairly sure the OP will be starting out in the " 53' van world with closed tandems ". Also, although I've been wrong before and likely will be again, I'd bet you won't cross every scale in every state no problem. You know how some D.O.T. officers can be.....

You also know that just because you're equipment is perfectly safe in a certain configuration, doesn't mean it is legal everywhere in that configuration.

This whole topic brings to mind a related question. I seen a guy, arguing with a D.O.T. officer about that officers intention to give him a ticket. The driver, who weighed in the neighborhood of 450 lbs was arguing that a ticket had to be written with the driver off the truck. He said, "that truck is legal with my fat butt standing in here". Just wondering, with those pictures of 12300 catscale tickets, if that reg is true. It could eliminate or at least reduce a little, some tickets in some situations.

Just checked atlas Indiana, Mississippi, and Louisiana have 12000 lb steer limits. I stand corrected. Which means unless there is an exemption for car carriers every one is illegal loaded in those states. I've never been bothered by Indiana. Ive been stopped on scale so dot could come out and check tire rating in other states. Wisconsin is 13,000.

Only off the interstate, @crb .
And even more amazing that so many don't grasp what @crb was responding to... this is an old thread, and the guy he responded to just popped in his incorrect opinion without bothering to see what had been covered further up the thread. (Imagine that, a driver who doesn't listen to a word anyone else says!) Perhaps it isn't he who has neglected to relinquish his position upon the mighty steed?

As far as confusion after reading this thread, you need to learn who is who around here, and who knows what they're talking about. It's not all that hard if you spend anytime around here. We even have one prolific poster (who shall remain nameless,) who is almost guaranteed to give the wrong answer to almost every question, yet still manages to get likes for his errant posts. But as a general rule, the better the thanks/posts ratio, the more likely you're getting good information.

So there's no confusion, here's the steer axle limits: On the Federal Primary system, it's 20K or the max of your equipment rating, whichever is lower. Other than that, the state rules apply, which vary considerably, but allow 12K minimum to any truck running modern steer sizes.

I'm curious as to the wrong answer to every question imaginable. Being as how everyone has their own correct answer. Who's to say who's wrong and who's right?

More like a lot of disagreements.

I'm rarely loaded where it goes over 12400 on the steers. it's just how it works out. shortly after snowwy left the 13000 lb comment I was in a predicament with no scale to be had after a fuel stop had to be over 12500 going through the weigh station. they didn't show the weights nor say a word. but ill never really know the weights on that one..
