I don't know how the company I work for does it sometimes with working on trucks and trailers and keeping them all on the road, our division shop is constantly busy, I was at the warehouse for 2 days this week and the shop had at least 4 trailers in for service and a couplet tractors. Refer units were being opened up and torn apart, tractors on lifts with wheels off and breaks trailers jacked up with hubs and break assemblies all disassembled, it's got to cost the company an absolute fortune to run all our trucks and maintain them.

The Madison County Board of Education (MCBOE) does have a tractor unit, but since they are central to 7 schools within the county, they cannot favor one over the other by lending their vehicles. They also will only let the county drivers drive county owned vehicles, of which we have to pay their salaries for 7 hour minimum at time and a half. Interestingly enough, the Coca Cola truck we are buying will belong to our school, but will be registered to the MCBOE, as they will put a 'lifetime' tag on the truck and insure it. The MCBOE will even maintain the truck for the cost of parts, as they will supply all the labor.
Anyway, here is the little spud that we picked up for $7000. It is a 2003 Peterbuilt "beverage truck"

Looks like that truck is in decent condition. And since you are only pulling marching band equipment (total weight of what? 20,000lbs. if your lucky?) AND the county is covering maintenance, you may have gotten a really good deal.
Who's gonna drive it, though? Still need a CDL-A to operate, plus a logbook for outside 100 air miles radius and interstate work (state and national competitions, after all).

I will be the driver, as I have been driving for the school for the last 8-years, and this will be my last since my daughter will graduate next May. They are not having any luck finding my replacement, and are trying to contract me for the next season... However, my wife and I are planning to start Expediting once my daughter is settled into college.

I have a question, my school district has a marching band trailer too, and it's a good size trailer, but it can be pulled by a pick up truck and doesn't require a CDL or anything. Why didn't you guys go that route instead? No CDL driver, every school district owns a pick up truck if not more then one, no special laws or any of that. Back in the day our school had a box truck they threw all the equipment in that. Just a question.

We use a 48' furniture van to support 283 students. The front ensemble is huge by itself. This year we will over flow to a small straight truck as well.

Geeze that's one big marching band with a group that size and all the rolling stock to support them do you guys just tour constantly year round and do competitions year round to make it all pay? I'd drive the marching band truck if they needed a driver, but I live very far away.
