Well this is my issue my shop quote me at 1500 dollars for parts and labor for a horizontal muffler and the split for a 06 century class with dual exhaust which I think it's too expensive, I'm trying to see if I can buy an aftermarket horizontal muffler and just turn it into a grass burner and save money by not buying flex pipes every year. Now can I just straight pipe the exhaust or will that make me fail the emissions test?
Horizontal muffler can I just straight pipe it and pass dot?

Yeah you could make it a grass burner with a muffler and be just fine. Or quit cheaping out on the flex pipe you're buying. Pay a few dollars extra for stainless flex and your annual rot problem will disappear.

Straight piping I don't believe is considered tampering with emissions equipment so long as they aren't catalytic mufflers that you're removing. They can possibly fail your truck for not having a muffler though. Some places consider the turbo as a sound dampning device and others require a muffler. Your best bet would be to install a short, horizontal muffler or resonator under the cab and to make sure that the exhaust is not exiting under the cab. A carbon monoxide alarm would be handy as well since the exhaust has a greater chance of entering the cab as well.

@Ruckie you still in nj?
@NorthernMechanic nj does visual opacity tests as well as sniffer tests.
Only place I ever got checked. Visual only and I only blipped it to 1200 bc I claimed I had a muffler and I don't think that would have been believable if I kicked it hard..
Idk how much a muffler really catches smoke, or affects a test like that- but you tell an inspector you got straights...seem like an easy way to earn a fine to me..... -
