I came across a driver the other day.

I saw him back into a dock.

I later asked if he had trouble with his steer tires needing to be replaced every 50,000 miles. He said yes, and we can't figure out why they only get 50k miles.

I told him that I was watching him back into the dock and told him why his steer tires were wearing so quickly.

When he pulled forward, he would look in his mirror and start turning the steering wheel, and THEN would back up.

I explained that he should never turn his steering wheel unless the truck is moving. The 6 tons of weight on the steers, 3 tons per steer tire pushing down while twisting the tire is grinding small flat spots into the tire.

If you turn the tire while the tire is rolling, it spreads the wear and tear evenly across the tread, extending the life of the tire.

For better results, bring a spray bottle of soapy water to spray on the tires, reducing abrasion while turning.....

I offen turn my wheels before rolling especially in tight places when I need the tractor to react as soon as I begin to roll.
I don't have a problem with my steers lasting more than 50k
Where did you come up with this nonsense.

The idea of more wear on the tire by turning while stationary is not nonsense. It is true.
But unless you are doing it for most of your driving day it probably won't affect tire wear all that much.
