Had met a gal in east houston one evening. She wanted me to stick around for a meal and talk. I wonder about her once or twice now and again. I hope she is happily married with a dozen kids.
Leaving that aside, if a truck you purchase for CDL work is PAID OFF, you are golden. It is a dream of every fleet on down to owner operator to have a paid off truck or 10,000 paid off trucks. There is a massive mount of money that goes to the bank each month, I recall when I bought that midroof FLD from the mid 90's it's 41K total cost to buy and then the bank nut was around 1000 with a additional set of percentages carefully stacked next to it beause the company that sold the tractor to me was specifically a leasing program to make owner operators out of company drivers. Deaf and discrimination took care of that little idea once the Owner objected. I let it go. That midroof was a nice tractor. But sometimes the Lord closes one door so tight you have to move on and try another one.
I did have one question. If anything at all.
If you are a Marine and working as a O.O in time of peace suddenly the phone rings and there you are on the front line forward edge of battle area for who knows how long? A year? 18 months? 3 days? You would lose your tractor trailer to the bank right?
Or is the Bank not allowed to reposssess?
22 w/ 40k saved... what do I do with my life?

College is overrated. !! Yep I said it. It only works if it is part of a long term plan after you graduate. Many kids go to college thinking it is the golden ticket and end up working for min wage in retail. So, go to college only if it will get you where you want to be, focused on the next 10-20 years. The world is full of college graduates that were pushed by their parents to go to school because it is the thing to do, no plan for afterwards. Now they have $50K in loans and a degree in French Renaissance History and a job in a Sonic.

It's pretty simple.
If you don't go to school you'll always wonder what could've been and you'll turn into one of the cliche grouchy truckers that feels trapped by their career.
If you go back to school you could love it and find everything you want or hate it and come right back to trucking knowing you gave it a shot.
I went to college for 3 years and left for trucking. I only regret it on the bad days lol -
Do what makes you happy, that way you'll never work a day. I've been in trucking almost 36 years, I've tried to leave it, but I love trucking. It was never my plan to be a trucker but as they say once it's in your blood ,well it's hard to walk away. Why not finish college then decide what specialty branch of trucking you think will make you happy and make money at. I've done some of almost every specialty branch of trucking and I make the best money pulling a frameless dump. I'm home everyday, don't work weekends and know pretty much what I'm going to do everyday.

Unless you're one of those rarer types that has the brains and the interest to sit through a STEM curriculum that degree probably wont do any good out in the real world unless it's something truly exceptional like a degree from a top 10 law or business school. They push college on anybody and everybody now to the point where a 4 year degree is meaningless. Its the new high school diploma.Last edited: Sep 4, 2016

Have you considered doing both? Many colleges offer online degrees.
Take a look at Western Governor's University (wgu.edu). All online. Take as many classes as you want for a flat fee of $3000 per semester - including books. Their semesters are six months long and start every month.Memphis10 Thanks this. -
For those people who are talking trash about college, there are still degrees that can make you some serious money. My friend went to be a nurse anesthetist, 5 year program and he started at $150k/yr. Only been a few years ago and he's up to $175k.
So whatever you decide, do your research on your expected income before you make your choice. Just because you know someone who went thousands in debt for some stupid degree and now can't find a job over $15/hr doesn't mean that every field is a lost cause
