Back in the mid '90's I worked for a small reefer outfit. I believe they had 75 power units or something like that. We ran produce from the coast to Colorado, then meat (boxed, not swinging,) from Kansas or Nebraska back to California. We were involved in JIT service when it was still fairly new. One of the company owners, was a real go getter. When it came to dropping at grocery warehouses, we had an appointment, and if we were on time, we were unloaded right now. We didn't have to worry about hiring lumpers, as this was all taken care of on contract. The company didn't even want us on the dock while unloading, they wanted us in the sleeper resting.
Running east from St. George was a real pleasure. Picking up the meat in Nebraska was always on preloaded trailers. We pulled in, took the trailer to the wash rack and dropped it, found our loaded trailer and buggied. Not quite as smooth in Garden City, usually a live load there.
The pain was running west of St George. The deliveries to the ports were pretty straight forward, but then the fun of the produce picks began, up and down the coast, or into the San Joaquin, with multiple stops for picks. However, again, the lumpers were all prenegotiated, and we just didn't screw with it.
