    2016 is a wrap!

This is just a high level view of my 2016 RV delivery season.

2016 was an all “drive-away” season. No towing. I towed a small ford Ranger pick up for my return back to elkhart. I also can sleep in the back of it - I have a camper shell on it.

Again - I’m seasonal - only delivering from middle of March to mid June. I did go back for two weeks at the end of July as a favor to my dispatcher.

Here is the re-cap. First off my goal is to stay under my social security cap of about $19,000. I can earn up to the cap without giving up part of my social security. Mission accomplished.

    The high level view goes-

    Total Paid miles- 22,320

    Days logging, (driving) - 56 - (335.0 miles a day logging)

Gallons per mile on all RV’s - 9.2

Average pay per mile - .84 cents

    Total revenue - $18750.00
Non reoccurring revenue - $ 1200.00 (taking drivers back to Elkhart and charging them) All total 19,948.00 (Note - the $1200.00 in driver delivery fees is not included in the below calculations - hey its my money for being a good guy.

Daily Expenses when delivering and returning to Elkhart (per day) Fuel/Food/Anything else - $257.00

Total Expense - $ 14392.00 for a difference of - $4356.00. This does NOT include tax obligations - yet.

I can do a deeper dive later in the year when I do the taxes, but for now this is a good representation of my past year. I suspect that around $1800.00 to 2400.00 will be due in taxes. It would bring the net down to about $2000 - $2700.00

Wow you made like 9 cents a mile! I guess if you enjoy it but other then that a complete waste of time.

I do... it's just for a few months. I take my wife with me about half of the time and we check out places we would like to RV to in the fall and late summer. Basically getting paid to see the country. Even after taxes on the high side ($2800.00) I still made around $3000.00 clear, (including the $1200.00 in bringing people back to elkhart). This is by no way my need to have job. It's great to get out and look around.

That's cool. I wasn't trying to be negative just retread my post and it came off that way. Sounds like a fun retirement gig

Thanks... did not feel the t way. I would not recommend it for a lot of people. My wife and I have been RV'ing for 30 years, (5 RV's so far), so this is a natural extension for us. Plus we get to drive around in new RV's all the time.

It's great that you get "paid" to "RV" around the country. What's not so great are the people out here doing it not for fun but because they have families to feed and have to compete against low rate retirees such as yourself.

You have hit upon what the problem is with the RV delivery industry. Can someone going into it really support a family? The need to define a criteria for supporting a family would need definition. As a transition jot to OCR - this is a great place to start. As a retirement job and looking for something to do - great job.

I’m not in to the debate on low cost freight - I’ll let the market determine that. It’s more a reaction to too many drivers in an industry that goes through drivers at an alarming rate, (as high as 70% turnover).

More like well over 100%. Now that sounds like everyone quit , not true . But sometimes the same position , was filled two or three times. Hire one quit , hire another , they quit...

That's like saying "I'm trying to raise my family bagging groceries but these high school kids keep driving the pay down to minimum wage".
Dude I'd love to work at the car wash. I wish nobody else worked there so I could demand $50 bucks an hour.
