I have my Cdl a and my son has been driving a dually with trailer that is less than 26,000 gcwr. If we had a trailer that put the gcwr above 26,000(he does not have a Cdl). could he take his Cdl a road test with that setup? Would be a quick process since he already knows how to drive that instead of a semi.
Thanks
Can you take Cdla test with dually and trailer?

If the GCWR is over 26,001 and the trailer is over 10,000 GVWR then yes. They will give you an air brake restriction.
Badmon and brian991219 Thank this. -

They should be. The FMCSA dictates what qualifies as a CMV and what is required for each license class. The feds also made it manditory for the air brake restriction because guys were taking their tests in a pickup/trailer combination and then driving a semi. FMCSAs website explains the air brake restriction.

Yes you can. Restrictions will be no air brakes and no semi. Air brake reason is obvious, semi restriction is because it is a gooseneck and not a 5th wheel. This is exactly how I started. He will still have pass the written combination test.

That's what I did. As said, air brake and semi restriction.

I initially got My cdl this way with out the airbrakes.. 3500 Dually with a 44 ft featherlite....
