    Lets say you come up to 7th gear and a stop is ahead in a city with multiple stops do you have to downshift all the way to 1 o 2 or just put in neutral from 7 and go up all the way from 1 or 2 of course remembering to flipping the selector. and repeat this process in all the stop signs.

    thanks

    If you travel farther than a truck length, you're "coasting" which is illegal in most states. You'll flunk your driving test in every state if you don't keep it in a gear except for the brief moments it takes you to shift. In other words, you downshift. Every time.

    Do I have to downshift all the way to 1 or 2 before the stop, or can I stop lets say in 6th, then put in neutral

    No you don't have to downshift to a complete stop. Do what you're comfortable with

    7th gear, brake and scrub the speed down...let the rpms drop...downshift to 4th or 3rd. You do know that you can skip gears, don't you?

    Btw, Bulldog' dead on about the regs.

    Never coast to a stop. Last truck length ok, but never ever more than that. PERIOD!

    Ever.

    Uncontrolled stop if you coast up with clutch in or trans in neutral. I've only ever driven 18 speeds and when I do drive I never bother with the splitter on downshifts. I'll bring it down to 4th direct on the low side, then once the RPM's drop down to idle, I'll step on the clutch and stop. Then shift into whatever starting gear I'm going to use.

    I down shift and brake until at 10 mph. Hit 10 mph go to neutral and brake the rest. Helps the brakes too to use the gears to slow you down.

    @Pedigreed Bulldog @TripleSix

    I was coming down a slight grade today and at the bottom is a light. I go through this light everyday at least twice, sometimes more. I understand what makes the light trip.

    Well coming up on it I seen it change from red to green, I said ok, i got time. Unfortunately it turned back to yellow red as I was maybe three truck lengths away. No time to down shift from 9th. So I pressed the clutch and gave it a good controlled braking and stopped before the brake line.

    I'm not worried if this is correct or not, just curious if this is illegal according to regs.

    Yes yes I know I should have expected the unexpected and should have been prepared for it. It was literally a "hey! Why is my head up my arse?"

    The second time around I was ready for that sob. It's off on its changing today.

    I'm pretty sure I answered my own question. What are your thoughts? Experiences?
