That's why they say now-a-days if you don't have 35k+ in the box - sit your ### on one side or the other. ;)

Don't joke, the upper Harlem River is one of the most beautiful parts of NY that nobody ever talks about. Just a shame you can't get more than a glance from the bridge. (Not recommended that you take your eyes off the road unless you're in gridlock. It's a long way down if you have an accident)

Most of the Harlem River Drive is a cars only back door from the FDR in Harlem to the GWB. (Actually, I'm a little unsure if a truck could legally take it down to 155th street where there's a special exit. I've seen a flatbed there once or twice. But let me clarify, I've seen the condition of the roadbed from below, you probably shouldn't go that way.)

But north of the GWB it's an exclusive road straight into Inwood. Probably the only "affordable" part of Manhattan, due to it's proximity to the "Boogie Down"

I can't 100% say this is a safe place to go solo if you're a tourist. But if you can hook up with a few friends, and one of you has some passable Spanish speaking skills, you'll meet some great people and probably find some delicious mofungo.

That bridge is actually the original aqueduct, and NYC still gets much of its water through it today. You can see it on the south side of the bridge as you cross it.

The view of the ESB under these arches when you are coming off 87 south up around the corkscrew is pretty impressive.

That's about as easy as that town gets. Do a little BQE, Van wyck or maybe some nice Atlantic Ave or Linden Blvd and you'll start to see how spooky that place is.

They'll shut that thing down at 55 mph winds now.

That's just it. The front reached the west end, small time storm that was growing and I was already on it from the east end, no shutdown procedures apparent at that time.

I was monitoring the big Bridge Tunnel System in Norfolk to eastern shore during the recent Matthew storm as it passed east and generated 55 plus winds and large rolling main, they had banned all but loaded semis carrying 40K with about one or two steps left according to wind speed prior to closing it entirely.

I hope none got onto that thing in the hurricane.... be the stuff of nightmares.

I come back across the Bay Bridge nearly empty every day.

The way it works now is as follows...

At sustained winds of 30-39 mph, warnings go up. At 40-49 mph, the phase one restriction is put in place, meaning no empties or house trailers. At 50 mph the phase two restriction goes up, with the 64k minimum weigh limit, obviously intended to target LTL trucks with single screws pulling tandem trailers since that's near the limit they can gross.
