    I have thought about a KW/ RV conversion for sight seeing ...I wonder if she'd ride smooth, or rough as heck like when bobtailing.

    To the OP. Why not get a straight truck with a big sleeper on it for expediting? Then your idea of income would be right in line with reasonable expectations, you would have adequate downtime and waiting, and ability to go where most drivers can't. Not saying you could go on BLM land, but lots of other places.

    Best post in here IMHO.

    I apologize for missing it....but have you ever driven something bigger than a box truck?

    Training and school will give you a taste. But it's a whole new game once you're given your first load assignment. It can be a bit daunting for a new driver. Then to complicate things, you wish to do it with a super sleeper.

    As Ruthless pointed out....finish school. Sign on with a company. Get some miles under your belt. See what trucking is really about before jumping in to o/o with both feet.

    Run thru the winter and reassess next summer. It doesn't sound as though you're hurting for the money.

    This is exactly my plan. I'm really glad I made this post as its garnered some really great opinions. I'm pre-employed with Schneider and am looking at other options as well. I'm going to #### my pants for 6 months and reassess just like you said. Its the only smart way to go about this lifestyle change.

    It's important I think to have 2 year and 5 year and 10 year plans, and in order to do that, you should dream big! Working hard and having lofty goals is my way of keeping optimistic.

    Sooner then later these trucks will drive them selves and more and more company truckers will be paid hourly, that's just the way I see this train moving, getting in on trucking early before the huge industry changes is exactly what I plan on doing. The end goal is a stupendous truck that drives itself, and I'm excited for that change. Even if it is 10 years down the road.

    But for now lofty goals are just that, goals. I'll sit in my freightliner and ill enjoy what I make out of it, and plan for the future.

    It's nice to have such realistic opinions on this board. I agree its going to take a lot of work to see if its worth it. I've got too many crazy ideas on what I want out of a truck, but I know if I flesh out even half of them I'd probably enjoy this lifestyle.

    What I'll have to start out with is unlimited internet through AT@T and probably a pay as a you go plan using T-Mobile's towers as well for when things get spotty. Virtual Reality and a great pc for gaming and you could put me in a 5x10 box and I'd never be bored.

    Workout out while on the road is another interesting topic, considering I know a company is never going to let me take out the passenger seat to put a bowflex MAX trainer in its spot. I might be crazy but It MAY just fit. Would be awesome too.

    But for now I'll keep my self entertained with whatever stock truck I start out with. Thanks for the great post.

    brad no offense but you do not belong in the industry , your going into this as a short term adventurer when it is not . while it is a life style it is also a job and you seem to be wanting a moblie box you can sit in while playing in your virtural reality pc games... really your worried about having unlimited data and virtual reality you have no business near a truck and this is coming from one of the new generation truckers that the old school that like to snar about. a bowflex in the passenger sit really? if you want to work out it plent of manual work you can do in truck but most driver chooice not to. unload your trailer instead of paying a lumper reefer ltl flatbed tanker and setting up them big hoses im sure is one heck of a workout as well etc.. you hoping for a a self driving truck will limited if not put most of us "working driver out of job and money" so you can sit in your mobile bunk and play video games while getting $10 an hour after all if you remove the driving part and they just need someone to blame if something goes wrong it will be minimum wage. G.T.F.U of here buy a rv if you want your data and video games. i mean you do relise a truck your going to be driving up to 11 hours a day you have 30min for pre trip inspection , plus 1 half hour break . so 12 hour plus you have another 2 hour to do non driving job related stuff and could end up working more then that off the book if you decide to unload your self and you have all your pallet that need 20-30 box off each pallet so the receiver accepts it ... by the time you get done your work hours your will want to take a shower most likely your not at home so you have to wait for a opening and them to clean and prep it for you this could take a while then you might want to get something to eat or make something in your truck. you be tired if your not a heavy sleeper and someone comes in with a reefer that keeps going into defrost all night. etc....

    Triggered! Love it, yeah its work, it's not moving birdseed all day though, so I'm not too worried. You DO have downtime though. If your hauling glass for Mavrick, your going to sit. If your driving tanker your going to be waiting a bit to pump out the load, although granted VR is too much away from watching the load for that. Reefer lol, all that time if your not a lumper, and why would you be if your company is paying for it. Id do the lumping for fun though when I o/o.

    The bowflex idea is exactly the kind of person I am and if it fits I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'll enjoy battlefield 1 and the new FF while I'm offduty and I'm amazed its offended you so. Do you just sleep fap and play mobile games? I just wish to do more with the little time I have.

    The hard truth about trucking is its the driver that's inefficient. The more that can be done to remove the driver from the equation, the more companies will push for it. The truck still needs to be manned in inclement weather and city driving, so truck drivers wont be out a job for a long, long while.

    The truck driving itself though is deviating from the threads intention though, that part of trucking is along ways off, but a 30K upgrade to let the truck steer is the only part of trucking that is not already automated. Rollover protection, auto breaking, lane departure warnings, adaptive cruise. The puzzle is almost finished, just a couple of pieces left.

    The best way I see fighting that part of this industry is just to specialize. Not all freight will be allowed on such trucks. Fuel or explosives, many flatbed applications. Your job is not at risk it just may change.
