I remember one year when my former company went on a "cleanup" campaign. They went to several companies that we're high cost to do business with, and told them they we're doing a massive rate increase. Most of the companies understood, and either accepted the increase because they recognized the service we provided, or told the company they simply couldn't afford it, and went to find other carriers.

Our policy is we don't do steps, and our inside delivery rule is inside the door. That's it.

The scenario you laid out might happen once, before the consignee gets backcharged double what the shipper was by the carrier. Seen that happen many times.

I agree. Inside the door only. And only if they agree to the inside delivery charges. A lot of those restaurants don't realize we are not foodservice delivery drivers.

Carry around a block of wood. It's not just for securing your pallet jack, it has MANY other uses. There was an old thread just on this subject alone. I found that a block of wood was just as important as a pallet jack.

If you have an old, worn out lift gate that tends to leak a lot, carry around some Transmission fluid. Hydraulic fluid and Transmission fluid are almost the same thing. Just make sure the company will reimburse you for the expense.

I had one regular stop that was a Payless Shoe store. They seemed to have trouble keeping store managers. Anyway, one cold snowy day, this brand new store manager tried to get me to sort out her freight for her. Obviously, I told her that I couldn't do it.
She started screaming at me, telling me that her "trainer" assured her that the delivery driver would sort their freight, according to some obscure code on the boxes. She then refused to sign the bills.
I told her to call her district manager. She refused, so I said no problem, I'll call her myself. Once she was backed into a corner, she did call her boss.
I couldn't hear the whole conversation, but it obviously did not go the way she wanted. She actually cried hard enough that the bill she signed was damp. Poor girl...
Anyway next time I went there she had been replaced.

When I was a pup---and broke away from the family--I got in the xtra board at big R many moons ago---Inside delivery is what kept me working---had couple malls on one route on the east side of Orlando--almost always on a 45' and most all inside deliveries---I just hang the breakroom right about 8--and wait for 1 of 2 bid drivers start their F****** whinin about not being able to fit a 45' in the docks--rolling 45 cases of shoes....wah wah wah......
Jus kinda make eye contact w/dispatch...he'd bark my name--I'd waddle over...ask him what he wanted--he'd throw that blue bill folder they used thru the window and tell me here's your run...I mumble something about him being a racist(he was afro-american)an sure.... F*** over the casual white boy! We'd wink at each other when no one would notice....and on those 100+degree fl summer days--Id spend my day making 20-25 drops--in those cool concrete catacomb hallways behind the stores in the mall and getting hot girls phone numbers that worked there----Ah the good old days....lmao
