I stopped at home for lunch, about ten miles from a discount fuel stop. Lost power on the entrance ramp after lunch. Walked home two blocks, emptied the lawnmower gas into the car, drove the car to the fuel stop.
How many of you have run out of fuel?

They let you fuel where you want, as long as it's in the guide. They'll offer routing for fuel stops as well, but it's optional if you know what you're doing...
Pro-activity is key.
Example:
My routing:
Leominster, MA > J in Milton, PA > Girard, OH
My actual fuel routing:
Newburg, NY (where I'm snoozing tonight - fuel up as part of pre-trip)
Hubbard, OH - 8 miles from Girard. I'll be full for the next one..... Let's just hope it isn't a 46k beer run.

Only one time have i run out of fuel or gas in my 35 yrs of driving. Working for coca cola, they had a fuel company come to yard and fuel all the trucks there. One time got back to yard pretty late. Next morning i didnt look at guage and ran out of fuel at a left turn lane next to santa clarita sheriff station. Took shop mechanic couple hours to show up. In the meantime... every cop car that passed stopped to see if i was ok lol

A couple of times with my bike on a track... And a bunch of times with the lawn mower.
Never with my truck...to me there's no excuse for running out with a rig. -
Ran out of beer once. Had to switch to whiskey.
Mr Ed, Boattlebot, Brandonpdx and 11 others Thank this. -
Yeah, I'm guilty of running out of fuel. I'm also don't mind running extremely low on fuel, so I can put in as much fuel where I want to.
In more than 25 years of being a truck driver, last year was the 1st, and thus far only, time I've run out. What makes it bad was it was the events occurred on the last day of the month and on the 1st day of the month.
I was on my way from New Orleans to somewhere in Florida. My "Low Fuel" light came on as I was going through Slidell. I wanted to fuel the next day, the 1st of the month, in Cottondale, FL. That is roughly 300 miles (30ish to LA/MS, 76ish across MS, 72ish across AL and 136 into FL). I decided I probably wouldn't make it, so I stopped in AL and put on 25 gallons. For a brief second, I considered putting on 30 gallons just to be sure.....but I didn't. I had it calculated perfectly and took off. What I failed to consider was having to stop and take a 10 hour break before I got to where I wanted to fill up the next day.
My APU was constantly running as I took my 10 hour break. Break was over, now in to a new month, and I can begin working on another 1500 gallons and I'm gonna start off by getting a good amount. I ended up running out of fuel and having to call a service truck about 36 miles short of where I wanted to fuel. That 5 extra gallons that I had briefly considered the day before would have made the difference in having enough to make it or not.
The lesson was (temporarily) learned and I wouldn't let it get below half-a-tank without topping off for the next 9 months or so. A few months later (after I ran out), my fuel pump had to be replaced on the truck. My guess is the failure of the fuel pump had a lot to do with me constantly letting my tanks get extremely low. We have 200 gallon fuel tanks and it wasn't too uncommon for me to put on 175-180 gallons of fuel.Dave_in_AZ and bzinger Thank this. -
I never ran out of fuel.PROFESSIONAL (mind I said PROFESSIONAL) drivers don't run out of fuel because it's very UNPROFESSIONAL.
Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
I didn't but one winter we had all our trucks running 24/7 in the yard. 1 truck got missed on the weekly fuel run. Driver made it about 500 feet down the road with a tridrive hydrovac and she died right in the middle of the road. I had to block both northbound lanes of the main road through the industrial park while I dumped 30 or 40 liters of fuel in the driver's side tank from the tidy tank in a 3/4 ton. Got it primed up and he made it off the main road and onto the side road, almost to the cardlock when it died again. Of course this is when that stupid Cat hand primer decides to say F U and stop working. Eventually got it going again.
