That's old old stuff there. You get paid the same wether the truck is loaded or empty. When you get your load info it will have empty and loaded miles listed. And they all count towards bonuses too.

Perhaps he was referring to lease ops or owner ops. Sometimes you eat the empty miles and fuel, sometimes you don't. Depends on the company. As a company driver for ANY company, that will never be an issue. The training program here at Millis is amazing, and I have yet to see even one example of a company that pays new drivers better than Millis. This is a great place to land.

chi-town joe and SHOJim Thank this.
  4. We will be talking more about this on Christmas Day. He is a nice man but a no BS kind of guy. He is a county inspector currently but I think he may have been a truck driver when my wife was a little girl. He seemed to be very knowledgeable about the business, and from reading the replies, it seems his knowledge and input would be outdated. But ... experience trumps everything else. I do know that he was gone a lot when my wife was younger, and it was due to working.

I thought it was three O/Os, but I haven't seen the purple T2000 or the black Freightliner in a while.

No doubt. I wasn't planning on being home for Christmas. I opted to stay out. But Opie dispatched me on a run that delivers on the 27th and it routes very close to home. I won't be there for more than 24 hours, but it was a nice surprise. My wife and kid are thrilled. Merry Christmas, Opie :)

The only people who have to eat the empty miles these days are independents and O/Os who book their own loads (mercer, land star, etc) most places that pay O/Os by mile pay deadhead miles too.

You'll always get paid empty or loaded. I regularly get trips with 150+ miles of deadhead . The trip I'm on now was 200. But I get paid for it all, as will you.

  10. I got my receipt and the application for school. I have to get my DOT medical card and my Learner's CDL before January 2 (has to be submitted on or before then). It has to be with no restrictions and Interstate, not intrastate (what does all that mean?)

My next full day off will be this Thursday the 29th. I plan on getting my DOT physical and my CDL Learner's permit then. Does anyone have a link for a good practice exam for the Georgia CDL learner's permit test?

Intrastate is limited to a single state, where Interstate is able to cross state lines. No restrictions, of course, mean that you don't have things like the no air brake restriction or limited to only automatic transmission.

Almost any CDL practice test online will work; I used the one at Trucking Truth. Be sure to download and read the Georgia CDL manual from the DDS website, it has literally everything you need to know.
