Stop pre-selecting put the transmission, put the transmission in neutral then change your range. That should stop most of the grinding until you get to the shop. BTW, if it is still grinding when you don't pre-select, it has probably knicked a couple of teeth off the bull gear

The shame is that 75 percent of shops don't have the ability to do the repair themselves so they get charged the $1500 by the folks that rebuild it then mark that up 50% to make their money on the service which is a pretty standard markup on parts in the industry. Also alot of shops don't have the knowledge it requires to remove just the auxiliary which is much quicker than removing the whole transmission and this costs the customer 6 aditional hours of labor and this all adds up to alot larger bill.

The best advice I can give any driver on this forum about transmission and rear end work is to do your research on Google or whatever means you have and find a local transmission shop especially if it's not a catastrophic failure. You guys OTR are covering alot of ground every day, use that to your advantage and find a speciality shop to do the repair to avoid the markups of the unqualified shop at the very next exit.

I would have to say that I wonder very much the same questions. I have a fuller 10 speed that grinds anytime the vehicle is moving and I switch from low to high range but it does not do it when I switch from high range to low range. I bought this truck in October and it is done it the entire time since I bought it. It's been 4 month ago

Is it possible to replace the bulb year and the transmission itself still be ok? I ask only because I'm trying to figure out how to minimize my repair cost

Find a good local shop that does that type of work. Sounds like your hi-low sync. is bad. After 4 months it may also need a bull ( auxilary ) gear. What model is it? Some you can just R&R the back but others require top plate removal first. Many trucks require transmission removal to do that. If your are in it that deep and look around inside might decide better to reman.

I'm not sure exactly which model it is and it has been raining so much so I haven't been able to get under there in order to identify it but it is on a 1996 Pete 379
