Because so many of the loads listed are not actually available, and I can't be continually scrolling the load board all day long.
I'm leaning on him some until I learn the lanes.
From what I've been told, 95% of the flat freight is customer freight.

Well it has been close over the last 10 days.
Had a load cancel and sat for an unintended 34 hr reset. So revenue wasn't the greatest.

    RStewart Thanks this.

Our orientation class was told 50/50 van and 95/5 flat, customer/brokered freight.
My experience so far has been for every load I get, there were 3 or 4 that weren't available prior to. Not a big deal, but waste a lot of my day....hence my comment of relying on my coordinator more than I want to.

    RStewart Thanks this.

Most van freight is bid on by lane. Whoever wins the bid gets the loads for that lane. When a company can't cover their lane or if the lane didn't get bid on then the load gets brokered out.

Just like Mercer has O/Os with their own authority that pull their freight, companies like Schneider have other trucking companies that they broker their freight to & it's not all left over junk either. I've picked up "good freight" right along side 3rd party carriers a few times. It wouldn't surprise me if some of Mercer's van freight comes from Schneider.

It helps not having a lot of bills. My truck isn't paid for but I have a cheap payment. I do have quite a few bills at home & I'm the only source of income.

I make money running for $1.25 a mile, not as much as I would like but I still make money. Last month my numbers showed I ran for $1.24 for all odometer miles & my profit was $0.72 before my wages. So I'm not going broke running for that but I'm still making a little money. I would like to be back at the $1.65-$1.70 I was running for at the end of 2015. Lol. Maybe some day.

That's really no different than with a flat. Direct customer or broker, the agent still had to get ahold of them to see if the load is still available. That's why if i haven't been dispatched after 30 minutes or so of being accepted on a load i start making phone calls to find out if it's a real load or a cattle call load.

    thaistick and RStewart Thank this.

It's a pretty dead spot. If you give the agent a heads up you can pull aluminum out of N. Vegas. Pays ok and runs about 35k and will get you to western PA.
Seems like it's picking up to me.

Renting isn't really what I want to do. And we are talking about some of that crazy money. I think I'm going to pull the trigger. Still looking tho.
