I know there are ways to make more money... but most places want drivers to stay out for 2-3 weeks. There are no guarantees to get home every weekend - and if there are... they may / may not live up to their guarantee. There are some companies (only a few that I know of) that guarantee a minimum salary - or a salary of any kind. The majority pay by the mile. Some pay by mover's miles, some by actual miles, some by hub miles.

Given that drivers can make over $1000 per week gross, at most companies - and obviously, a lot more than that in some places... why don't more companies pay a salary, instead of by the mile.

Nothing pisses me off more, as a driver - than sitting around, waiting for some slow ### shipper / receiver to do their jobs... as much as 5 hours in some places. If I'm getting paid by the mile - I'm losing money, while I sit. The other thing that pisses me off is waiting for my next load, because dispatch waits to give me my next load, until after I've delivered the load I'm on (a regular situation where I'm at now). Honestly - I just hate sitting. But, at least I'm getting paid, while I'm on salary!

There are a lot of things I like about the company I'm with though... and although I can (probably / possibly) make more somewhere else / doing something else... it's not all about the money.

This thread is supposed to be about guaranteed pay and guaranteed weekends off - as a company dry Van driver... not how much more I can make getting paid by-the-mile somewhere else... or doing something totally different than what I'm doing (i.e. tanker, flat bed, heavy haul, reefer, doubles / triples, flying a helicopter, etc.)

And what exactly do you have to do for that kind of pay? How many years have you worked there / getting paid for years of driving? Do you drive a dry van, doubles / triples, or reefer? Do you have to drive nights, every day - and do you get off every weekend... a full 2 days, or 34 hours?

It's great to know that there are jobs out there that pay that much - but can anyone with 2-3 years of experience get that job, and get that kind of money - as a company Dry Van driver? I think not.

Been here 3 years. Dry Van, no touch /drop and hook. Live load/unload you stand and watch. Actual miles paid/stop pay/delay pay/sleeper pay. Made 94k last year because I was slacking off, going home just after lunch on day 5. Weekends off? I get 2 days off per week but you have to have lots of seniority to get Saturday and Sunday off. Definitely get 48hrs though.

an experienced driver thats not making 52000$ a year needs to move up
dry van is easy but if it dont pay the bills maybe you need to specialize and find a niche you like

I look at things a different way. If you get paid salary and have to wait forever for a load you're putting in more time for the same money.
The problem with salary is they can work you to death for the same amount of money.

Getting in with a company that pays detention pay along with mileage beats salary pay any day.

You are doing well driver, but there is better. Even some bottom LTL guys at Fedex Freight down the road from you in North Jackson average well over $1000 to start. But no guarantees. With 6 years and at my current carrier, I make 70 cpm driving and $27.65 all non drive time. It's around $1400 a week for 40 hours, home daily, off weekends.

Essentially what I'm saying is if you want to max out your earnings, go LTL now for 100k potential, instead of being stuck at 55k. It pays in the long run.

Good take home amounts. If you are OTR and not making that. it's not worth it.

I thought the same thing... and actually expected them to run me hard... but it turns out, they don't run me any different than they did when they paid me for mileage... and I average less than 2200 miles per week, which equals .45 per miles driven on average.

I work 5.5 days a week - home every weekend. That means I get $181 per day... which I'm guessing is a whole lot more than you get paid for detention.

Every company is different about detention / layover pay - but most don't really compensate you for the lost drive time. You could easily make more driving than sitting around. Some companies don't pay for detention, unless there is an agreement with the customer. I get paid the same amount every day.
