I see, thanks for the quick replies. What reason is there for me to use a third party tester? Will I be able to test with a manual?

Someone either in school now, or actually driving at Millis could answer better

The 3rd party tester would be for your state testing to get your CDL A, not for the company testing to get your solo truck. The only reason I know of would be if for some reason the timing/schedule couldn't be worked out to get you back to your home state to test out and you didn't want to wait. Don't know if it has ever happened with anyone at Millis in particular but I have heard of people doing it that way from time to time in general.

Couldn't speak for the manual transmission testing, you would need someone currently with Millis to answer that one.

I can't speak for every school because it seems like there are some variables to each.

I live in New York and trained at the RIchfield, WI school. At the end of school before I went with my trainer, I had the option to take the CDL road test with a 3rd party tester. I used a school truck which was a manual, in Richfield. The fee was $150. You will pay a fee to your state's DMV if you end up testing with them. There is a fee either way.

He failed me the first time because of my alley dock and I had to retake it a week later so no free passes because he is associated with the Millis school. I got set up for it wrong and once that happens forget it. In real life you can correct your set up all you want but in testing it is limited.

Once I passed, the 3rd party tester electronically transmitted my results to NY. When i went home I went down to DMV with some paperwork I was given, paid another fee to them and they looked up my info in the computer. Once they verified everything I was issued my NY State CDL by them, based in the road test I took in Wiscinsin. All skills tests are suppose to be standardized now which makes the test I took in Wisconsin valid in NY etc...

The orher possible scenario is you test after a few weeks with your trainer in your home state thru your local DMV. You will use the trainer's truck so whether it is a manual or auto that's what you are using. I would request a trainer with a manual to avoid having an auto only restricted license. It is the luck of the draw whether your trainer will have an auto or a manual. Mine had an auto. The manuals are slowly being phased out. Many companys are starting to do this and I think in a few years it will be the norm. Just like power steering, power brakes etc....

Hope this all makes sense. Good luck.

I'm going to Cartersville as I live in Atlanta. The road test is 50 dollars in Ga so no worries. I will not have a home once I go to cartersville, will they put me up at a hotel until I get my own truck when necessary?

A hotel room is provided throughout training, just let them know you need a room (you will have a Roomate but they are nice rooms with a small fridge, if a microwave isn't already in your room call the front desk & ask for one & they'll bring you one), breakfast is provided each morning at the hotel (biscuits & gravy, bacon, eggs etc) & they provide lunch at the school, (usually gift cards to a Subway, Wendy's, Zaxbys etc & we take the school van). Hope that helps some!

I appreciate the replies. Peggi has been wonderful as my recruiter and I will pay my $100 tomorrow morning. I've heard great things about Millis from the training to running OTR. Pay is awesome too. I'm nervous as I'll be leaving transitional housing and will be homeless until I get into my truck even though I will have a hotel room. I also read that you don't take your cdl a until you been with your trainer for a couple weeks. This means I'll make some money before testing so that gives me comfort. Now all I have to do is find a ride to Cartersville from Atlanta.

Welp, i'm getting my tuition (after military discount) paid by my transitional housing organization. I'll have 500-600 dollars for living expenses until I get paid that first week of on the road training. I'm due at the Cartersville school on March 20th. Just gotta get my CDL A Permit now, should have it by the end of the week. Finally moving forward after 5 months of living in a homeless shelter. Peggi's patience is superhuman, can't wait to get on the road!
