Some terminals ive seen, they have dockworkers driving those yard jockey trucks. Fedex Freight certifies employers to drive jockey just like when they certifie dockworkers to drive forklifts.

FXG switchers do not have to have a CDL -

We have a training program to replace the one year experience.

Basically - I can bring a new guy on right out of driving school and supervise them for 970 hours of road time.

This must be completed in 9 months or less and replaces the "one year".

I know several people that have done this program - seems to work out better than a lot of the "run with a trainer for 30 days" programs at OTR companies.

It's a case by case basis.

I'll be starting work as a Switcher/Yard Dog tomorrow. The place I'll be working does require us to have a CDL A.

The stipulation is if and or when, a Switcher must drive on a public road pulling a Class A trailer (even for a very short distance), the driver MUST possess a CDL Class A.

For other trucking companies accepting Switcher/Yard Dog work is also on a case by case basis when it comes to experience. I asked a company just yesterday about Switcher/Yard dog experience translating over and they stated YES the would take it as Class A experience. I spoke with another company last week that said no, they would not accept it as Class A driving experience.

My time doing research (past few months) proves to me that many issues (especially concerning experience) are totally arbitrary and have NO set standards. NONE. It's all pretty much case by case basis and any interested parties MUST contact each and every company to find out from the horse's mouth.

Just make sure that horse is not a Recruiter ! LMAO !
