The oppression is amazing...and it continues. Everybody wants drivers, quality hands with experience and then they pull this micromanagement crap. Toss in stagnant wages and verbal abuse at all levels and one has to ask why do it.....( rant over )

And a fact: My fleet actually pulled the box accident cameras from the units with instructions NOT to photo accidents etc.anymore....point was the photos actually did MORE DAMAGE in court thus resulting in bigger awards because the driver is not a professional photographer and is not trained on exactly what to include in said photo. ( or not include ) AND the carrier was found negligent for not keeping up with the cameras condition / shelf life. Same will be challenged with driver cams.

It all comes down to liability and insurance. The benefit has nothing to do on the drivers side except assist his case if it were to go to court.

As of someone posting earlier that there are redicolous rules like turning your head too far left and right.... that is complete BS. I will say that we are NOT allowed to talk on the phone at all, no bluetooth or anything while on duty. The way that Saia looks at it, is that they pay you enough for the 11 hours that you drive, that your phone calls can wait. The city drivers are looked at like a factory worker. They don't allow factory workers to be on the phone while being paid by the hour so why let the drivers that are paid that way as well.

For the NE expansion, the top pay right now is somewhere around 27.50. What they DON'T tell you is that is the TOP out pay that you reach after 18 months. you start out about 24.75 and get a raise of about 65 cents at 6 and 12 months and the rest at your 18 month mark.

Linehaul is sort of the same way. they start you out at like 56 cents per mile and you get a raise each 6 months until your topped out at whatever the linehaul pay will be.

There are 4 expansions right now. Pittsburg, Harrisburg, and Philly( which is really Cinnaminson, NJ) in PA and Newark, NJ which are planned to open this 2nd quarter 2017. 4th Quarter 2017 they plan on opening Baltimore MD and possibly a further NE point of Boston, MA. We currently were not into the NE market as they did not have the carrier/freight demand. From what they briefed earlier this year, they have been getting more and more pressure from our national accounts that if they did a NE expansion, more money would follow.

That is why when they released the info about the NE expansion, the same day our stocks jumped by approximately 10% and have not dropped since showing a steady growth.

To address the driver facing cameras, yes they are retro fitting ALL linehaul trucks that are 2013 and newer with these cameras. They are incident based triggered cameras. They are tied into the distance alarms, lane departure systems, speed sensors and all that. We have even had drivers popped for speeding because they cameras triggered and these "analysis" desk jockies analyse everything in sight when watching. When triggered they get a 4 second before and after review of that incident. IF the 3rd party desk jocky decides its worthy to be sent to safety, it is.

This effects the city drivers too. As most know about LTL we swap seats and utilize the OTR/system trucks during the day as city drivers. so all the trucks that are 2013 and newer, both city and linehaul will most likely have them. All of the ones out of the CIN region have been retro fitted and ALL trucks in the SAIA network within the year range will be updated within 3 months when they go in for their next PM.

Worked for them for 3 1/2 years. They only take freight that they can make a profit on. More than a few times I had to return pickups in Portland that had destinations that were not profitable. If they are moving into the NE it is because of a national account. The only reason they were in Portland was because of Lowes. When I was there, Portland was not profitable. They were very open about their finances.

Actually the NE expansion was not due to 1 account. It was due to not wanting to renew our contract with our NE contracted service provider. So Saia bought 4 Terminals that opened up in May, Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Pittsburg PA .... and Newark, NJ.
We also have Baltimore opening up 4th quarter this year and somewhere up in New England around 1st/2nd quarter 2018.

So far we are operating at 115% above the projected bills/freight.

I worked for SAIA for 18 months out of BOI terminal. When I was informed about driver facing cameras, I said I would quit. Unless, I was paid .25 extra per mile for 3rd box and not just a nickle and/or pay 100% of my insurance for wife and I. Since they have money for cameras and the subscriptions to monitor them I figured they had to much extra cash laying around.
Guess what. I am no longer there.
