LEO can search in your truck for evidence if he has reasonable suspicion . Most of them were born with.
They do search in cab garbage for receipts or anything. Have seeen it many times in AZ or NM.

I'm wondering how the DOT went about getting the gps, did he take it himself or did he ask you to hand it over? And did he give it back after looking thru it?
-
Every GPS I have owned can have a power-on password enabled. Turn GPS off if getting inspected, turn back on when leaving.

Dye Guardian Thanks this. -
Doesn't it suck when they figure out ways to cheat your cheating, and uncover your violations? Lol
Funny how most of the responses are about how the officer was wrong, not about how if the driver had been driving legally, it would not have been a problem
They are going to continue finding ways, through technology, and through laws, to crack down on people driving illegally, so maybe we should focus on either obeying the laws, and then working to get them changed and improved.Big Don and spyder7723 Thank this. -
The stand alone GPS cannot be used to support the logbook. -
Do you know the OP wasn't driving legally? Was the driver cheating? What did he get put OOS service for? Was it an hour's difference? Five minutes? Did it appear he was stopped when he wasn't? Did the GPS, which is not a certified instrument, malfunction? Do you think that law enforcement should be allowed to just write whatever violations they feel like regardless of whether they are within the law or there is an actual violation? Let me guess, you believe "if you do nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about?" Until you run into a bent cop. Do you think that any officer should be allowed to sieze any of your belongings without legal authority and examine them? Your phone? Your computer? Your personal files? Do you think law enforcement should be required to follow laws and regulations?
You'll notice that at no point have I suggested the OP is absolutely innocent either... not enough information to go on.Klleetrucking, JPenn, Socal Xpress and 2 others Thank this. -
I've had my gps show 123mph which is mathematically impossible with gearing, rpm limit etc.
So should a Leo be able to ticket me based on that?Klleetrucking Thanks this. -
Had it in his car for 15 to 20 minutesRiprap Thanks this.
