That is the best reply I have ever heard on oil change intervals based off oil samples plus following comments.
I had no respect for oil samples when I had a call from corporate that we need to get a unit checked out due to oil sample results. Really? We just got it from an overhaul! Then another company had coolant in oil and had some engines overhauled under warranty. Those would never have been caught before the warranty expired without samples. That was over a 30 year period. Now some people, like cowpie, have narrowed it down to maintenance monitoring plus needed service intervals.
My question is if your truck starts using a gallon of oil every 2500 miles after 10,000 miles from the last oil change what advantage does anyone see in not changing the oil and filters at around 16,000 miles?

Well, if the engine was not consuming oil till reaching 10K after the last oil change, and then started using a gallon every 2500 miles, I would be in a rush to find out what happened to cause that. I don't see any advantage to going longer on the oil change, as a change that sudden and that much in oil consumption would give me the impression that the engine is heading for a major failure if not checked quickly.

Thanks for the reply: I have seen similar results with more than one truck, engine and oil brand. I own an IHC 1066 that has been doing that for 20 years. When it starts using oil change it and it stops using oil. What does that mean.
I am pretty far off from bull gears just asked you share your knowledge for me and others.

I had my bull gear replaced back in November of 2016. Certified Detroit shop. They didn't time it right and bent three valves. After replacing the head on their dime, I was good to go. Fast forward to three days ago (5 months, 46000 miles) the gearbox started making noise. I called the very same shop back, and consulted with the shop foreman. He told me to run it for a day, and see what happens....Sixty miles or so later, I was calling a tow truck. Towed to their shop. The next day, I got a call, they stated the bull gear had lost a couple of teeth. On the third day, I got another call and now the bull gear is fine, but the idler gear is missing three teeth, and the compressor gear is missing a tooth, and all the exhaust valves are bent. A Detroit Diesel engineer is coming in to assess the "reason for failure" to see if it is warrantied or not.....As far as I'm concerned, they were the last ones in that gearbox, the last ones to work on it, and they were told to replace anything that needed replaced....It was very clear that I wanted NO MORE PROBLEMS with this engine! Yet now I am getting a song and dance about whether or not it's gonna be under warranty!

Yeah...They won't warranty the work. So I'm gonna have it towed to another shop and fixed there, then sue the jerks.

So what reason did they give for the failure?
